No. 2 Punahou shuts down No. 5 'Iolani

By

POSTED: Friday, January 23, 2009

There's so much love between Punahou and 'Iolani, the Buffanblu decided to smother their visitors with everything they had.

Punahou used an airtight matchup zone to thwart No. 5 'Iolani's long-range sharpshooters in a surprisingly easy 58-29 rout at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.

In front of some 300 fans last night, the second-ranked Buffanblu limited 'Iolani to 26 percent shooting (9-for-34), including 4-for-18 from behind the arc. It was a dramatic turnaround from the first meeting between the teams on Jan. 6, when the Raiders upset the Buffanblu 42-38.

“;We didn't bring the energy last time,”; Punahou coach Mike Taylor said.

“;Their whole offense is predicated off dribble-drive. They're great finishers and great free-throw shooters,”; Taylor said. “;We had to really trust our help side, keep our hands out and move our feet.”;

'Iolani struggled at the free-throw line (7-for-17).

Janelle Nomura had eight points and five assists to lead Punahou (9-3), which took control of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball race by improving to 4-1. Tressa Torres added eight points and seven rebounds, and Mysha Sataraka tallied eight points off the bench.

Punahou shot 38 percent from the field (18-for-47) and 19-for-33 from the foul line (58 percent).

Georgette Lopes-Liutolo hit three treys and scored 13 points to lead 'Iolani (8-7, 4-2 ILH).

Punahou jumped to a 10-0 lead in the first 3 1/2 minutes and never looked back. After Anna Merrifield hit a 12-footer in the key, the Buffanblu led 17-3 early in the second quarter.

The Raiders stuck to a 2-3 matchup zone of their own and tried to rally. A 3-pointer by Lopes-Liutolo and a drive to the hoop by freshman Kylie Maeda brought 'Iolani within 25-17 with 4:50 remaining in the third quarter, but Punahou used its depth to dominate the last 12 minutes.

“;We just couldn't hit. We got looks and good shot selection,”; 'Iolani coach Marlene Zeug said. “;You've got to tribute their rebounding.”;

Punahou won the battle on the boards 43-13.

“;Rebounding is passion,”; Taylor said. “;Pat Summit says rebounding wins championships.”;

Buffanblu guards covered 'Iolani man-to-man above the foul line while their post players stayed in a zone under the basket.

“;We like the 3, but we love to drive, and they defended it well. That's Mike. They did their homework,”; said Zeug, who coached with Taylor at Punahou almost a decade ago.

The good news for the Raiders, whose starting lineup is all underclassmen, is that they have very little time to dwell on the loss to their arch rivals. 'Iolani plays its third game of the week tomorrow against No. 9 Sacred Hearts.

“;Our team is young. We knew it's a big game and we wanted to do well,”; Zeug said. “;To navigate that, that'll come with time.”;

Nomura's scoring average has declined this season, but her efficiency has increased as she becomes more of a distributor.

“;There's so much attention brought to her,”; Taylor said. “;She's giving up the ball quicker, and it's hot potato after that. She knows defenses adjust to her.”;

Punahou has been largely a man-to-man squad in winning three of the last four state championships, but looked impressive in the matchup zone.

“;You gotta do what you can to be successful. You gotta have tricks in your bag,”; Taylor said.

Punahou visits No. 7 Kamehameha tomorrow.

A third meeting between 'Iolani and Punahou is set for Feb. 4 at the Raiders' gym.
