WAC honors for Lajola and Friesen

Hawaii tennis player Dennis Lajola and diver Emma Friesen were honored by the Western Athletic Conference for their performances last week.

Lajola was named WAC men's tennis player of the week after improving to 9-4 in singles play this season. Lajola, ranked 56th nationally, defeated No. 49 Kalim Stewart of California 7-5, 7-5. He also helped the Rainbow Warriors to a win over San Diego State.

Friesen, the defending NCAA champion in 1-meter diving, was named WAC diver of the week after placing first in the 1-meter final and third in the 3-meter at the Rainbow Diving Invitational.

 

Warriors still 11th in volleyball poll

The Hawaii men's volleyball team remained 11th in the Bison/ACVA Division I-II men's coaches poll released yesterday.

The Warriors (1-4) received 68 points in the poll after dropping two matches to No. 4 Pepperdine last week. Hawaii will try to end a four-match losing streak when it travels to Utah to face No. 9 BYU on Thursday and Friday.

Chaminade comes back on HPU

Noah Gottlieb scored 17 points and Joel Smith added 13 as the Chaminade men's basketball team beat Hawaii Pacific 67-63 last night at McCabe Gym.

The Silverswords trailed by more than 10 points in the second half before beating the Sea Warriors behind a 3-pointer by Gottlieb to tie it at 61 and a basket and two free throws by Mohamed Tangara.

Chaminade improved to 7-7, 4-2 in the PacWest. HPU dropped to 7-6 and 1-3.
