Farrington rolls past McKinley

One niece stepped out and another promptly stepped in.
Kirsten Liana had 18 points and 12 rebounds to power No. 1 Farrington over McKinley 68-52 in a battle that was close until the final quarter.
Liana, a niece of coach Caroline Tatupu, helped Farrington (11-4) improve to 5-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East before a boisterous crowd of about 300 at chilly Richard Kitamura Fieldhouse.
McKinley (7-6) dropped to 4-2 in league play.
Liana's stellar performance helped the Governors offset the temporary absence of her cousin, leading scorer Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo, who missed the game to see her older sister Bryanna play for Notre Dame de Namur against BYU-Hawaii.
“;I knew since we didn't have my cousin, we all had to step up our game,”; the 5-foot-11 sophomore said.
Tatupu, who also stepped in to guide the JV team for the night, was satisfied.
“;I had no doubt that the girls could get the win without Brydgette here,”; she said.
The Govs have shown no signs of slipping since being voted to the top spot in the poll last week by coaches and media.
“;Teams are playing us extra hard,”; Liana said. “;Winning tonight helped us out a lot. I'm proud of my team 'cause we all did our jobs.”;
Farrington used various pressing defenses to wear down McKinley. Center Lusina Otineru added 13 points, seven boards and two blocks, and 6-foot junior Sofia Folaumahina added eight points.
Guard Natalie Mata sparked the backcourt with 16 points on 8-for-13 shooting. Farrington's guards kept McKinley sharpshooters Kylie Sato and Jackie Tihano off-balance most of the night. Sato finished with eight points and Tihano, who had six 3-pointers against Roosevelt on Thursday, was held scoreless after missing five times from the arc.
“;Their style of defense, they close out well. (Tihano) shot it, but they were good at closing her out,”; McKinley coach Abel Warner said.
The Tigers got 22 points from guard Ashley Gravely, who sank 11 of her 12 free-throw attempts and added six steals. Center Jorina Faletoi started strong with nine first-half points.
“;We had Farrington in early foul trouble, but we couldn't get the ball to her consistently,”; Warner noted. “;We just have to simmer down, read the defense. After that initial trap, it's there.”;
Faletoi added six boards and two steals, and Brenda Walker had six points and six rebounds.
Farrington outrebounded the visitors 37-21, but shot only 53 percent from the foul line (18-for-34).
McKinley took its first lead, 13-12, on a three-point play by Faletoi before the end of the opening quarter. The Tigers' 2-3 zone tested Farrington's patience and 6-for-16 shooting at the line by the Govs in the first half kept the game close.
Farrington led at the break 26-24 despite foul trouble for Otineru. McKinley's execution against the press and halfcourt man defenses were key.
“;We had to get the basics of defense, get between the ball and the man,”; Tatupu said. “;We told our bigs to front (Faletoi) and force them to lob it.”;
Faletoi scored only one point in the second half. The Govs stretched the lead to nine with a 14-7 run to start the third quarter. Otineru's spin move for a fast-break layup gave her team a 40-31 lead.
McKinley was within three late in the third quarter, but Folaumahina and Mata scored buckets in the final 5 seconds and Farrington had a 48-41 lead going into the fourth.
Dominating the boards, Farrington opened the lead to 61-47 on Mata's drive to the bucket midway through the fourth. McKinley got no closer than nine the rest of the way.
The Tigers have some board work to do before they meet Farrington again.
“;What are they, 7 feet? We're not in position boxing out.”; Warner said. “;We didn't practice yesterday (Friday) because we couldn't. That was the hard part.”;
McKinley shot 36 percent from the field (15-for-42), including 1-for-10 from 3-point range. The Tigers shot 75 percent from the foul line (21-for-28).
Farrington fared better from the field at 46 percent (25-for-54) and improved at the foul line in the second half (12-for-18).

Ashlyn Onaga and Hikaru Kumagai each scored 16 points to lead Kalani.
Roosevelt's Tasia Kamakawiwoole scored a game-high 19 points.
