Rough ride for Roosevelt in win over McKinley

POSTED: Friday, January 16, 2009

Tasia Kamakawiwo'ole had 19 points and 13 rebounds as Roosevelt edged previously unbeaten McKinley 71-69 last night at the Rough Riders' gym.

Roosevelt improved to 4-1 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East, sending the Tigers to their first loss after four wins.

“;When we needed to pull together, we did,”; Roosevelt coach Clint Chikamori said. “;Credit to our girls. They stayed calm in the heated moments. They gutted it out.”;

The Rough Riders saw a 20-point first-half lead dissipate, and then nearly blew an 11-point second-half margin. Roosevelt led 70-63 after Joshy Noga hit two foul shots with 35 seconds left.

Tatiana Dinson then hit a 16-foot baseline jumper and a foul shot to bring the Tigers within 70-66 with 18 ticks left. After a jump ball on the inbounds play gave McKinley the ball, Jackie Tihano hit her sixth 3-pointer of the night and the Tigers were within 70-69 with 10.4 seconds remaining.

Noga then traveled with the ball near the sideline, and Roosevelt had a chance to win with 5.7 seconds left. After each team called a timeout, Dinson drove from the top of the key into the paint, but found her path sealed off by Kamakawiwo'ole. Dinson's shot missed off the glass, and Noga hit a foul shot with two-tenths of a second left for a two-point lead.

Ashley Gravely's shot from the halfcourt line would have counted, but it banked off the board and curled out of the rim as time expired.

Roosevelt got balanced scoring. Nicole Ramirez had 15 points and three assists, Abcde Furuta-Harada tallied 14 points and four steals, and Noga finished with 10 points despite missing much of the game with foul trouble.

Tihano led McKinley (7-5 overall) with 18 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the arc. Several of her treys were from 23 to 25 feet out over Roosevelt's 2-3 zone.

“;I felt comfortable,”; said Tihano, who injured an ACL in September but showed no effects. “;I was just trying to get my team back in the game.”;

Center Jorina Faletoi scored 14 points before fouling out. Kylie Sato had 13 points and six boards, and Gravely added 13 points, four steals and four assists.

The Rough Riders shot just well enough from the foul line in the final quarter (14-for-20) to eke out the win. They shot 59 percent from the field (23-for-39), but committed 25 turnovers against McKinley's mix of fullcourt pressure and a 2-3 matchup zone.

McKinley shot 39 percent from the field (21-for-54) and was outrebounded by the taller Rough Riders 30-18.

Roosevelt jumped out to a 35-15 lead early in the second quarter, buoyed by Kamakawiwo'ole, who had eight points and dominated the glass early on.

Ramirez was on fire, too, with 10 first-half points, including a pair of treys.

However, the visitors went on a 23-3 run to tie the game at 38-all early in the third quarter.

The tide turned quickly, though, with an 11-2 run by Roosevelt. After Kamakawiwoole hustled for a follow shot, the Rough Riders led 51-40 just before the end of the third quarter.

Tihano hit a pair of NBA-range bombs to rally the Tigers, but they never gained the lead or tied the score the rest of the way.
