BOISE, Idaho » A week later and a different venue added up to the same result for the Hawaii men's basketball team.

The Rainbow Warriors dropped a 54-49 decision at Boise State's Taco Bell Arena last night, exactly a week after the Broncos scored a win over Hawaii at the Stan Sheriff Center.

This game looked an awful lot like the first meeting, where Boise State ended the game with a 12-2 run to take a 70-58 victory.

This time, it was a 7-0 run that turned a 47-47 tie into a BSU win.

“;I thought we made a couple of mental errors,”; Hawaii coach Bob Nash said. “;We had some traveling calls that gave them a chance to get back.”;

Hawaii also let Boise State end the first half on a 9-0 run that turned a tight game into a 33-23 contest at halftime.

“;We've got to manage the clock better at the end of the halves,”; Nash said.

Hawaii (9-7, 1-3 WAC) now has lost five in a row to the Broncos (12-3, 3-0), who also took the overall lead in the history of the rivalry at 9-8.

It was the sixth consecutive win for Boise State—its longest winning streak since the 2003-04 season. The victory kept the Broncos tied for first place in the Western Athletic Conference with Utah State, which won at New Mexico State yesterday.

Hawaii, though, had its chances. After falling behind 37-24 early in the second half, the Warriors' zone defense slowed the tempo of the game to their liking.

“;They went big and played zone,”; Boise State coach Greg Graham said. “;With the four big guys in there, it made it hard to penetrate. And when we got in there we forced too many shots.”;

After being outrebounded 16-12 in the first half, Hawaii got on the boards in a big way. Those rebounds turned into second-chance points and free throws as they climbed back into the game.

“;We came back and fought,”; Hawaii junior Roderick Flemings said. “;We all came together and came back. We played hard.”;

Hawaii's defense held Boise State to just two field goals in the first 13 minutes of the second half. The Warriors took their only lead of the game when Flemings nailed a 3-pointer to put Hawaii on top 44-43 with 6:52 left.

But that turned out to be Hawaii's final field goal until Bill Amis' putback with less than a second to play.

Down the stretch, Hawaii had six turnovers, including four in the final 2 minutes. Those turnovers led directly to six of the Broncos' final nine points.

Boise State point guard Anthony Thomas made big plays—converting a pair of steals into uncontested layups and hitting a 3-pointer that gave the Broncos the lead for good at 50-47 with 2:08 left.

“;Credit Boise State—they did a great job in the last few minutes,”; Flemings said.

Hawaii played its second consecutive game without point guard Hiram Thompson, who is nursing a hamstring injury.

Flemings, who finished with 17 points, was the only Hawaii player to reach double figures. Petras Balocka added eight points and eight rebounds.

Shooting again was a problem for Hawaii, which made only 33 percent from the field, 30 percent from 3-point range and 60.9 percent from the foul line.

Hawaii had been making 73.2 percent from the line.

“;We generally shoot them pretty good,”; Nash said. “;That was not characteristic for us.”;

The loss was the third in as many road games for Hawaii, which returns home for a Saturday game against San Jose State.

Graham said he's glad the Broncos won't see Hawaii again in the regular season.

“;They're going to win their share,”; he said. “;They have a lot of combinations they can play. They are going to be hard to beat.”;
