Kuki'o moved up two notches to No. 15 on this year's Travel + Leisure Golf magazine list of Top 100 Golf Communities, as selected by its editors.

The Kona golf community was No. 17 last year.

The magazine's Top 100 also includes Hualalai, as it did last year, though numbers are not provided below No. 25 in the online listing.

Topping the 2009 leaderboard is Pronghorn in Bend, Ore., Palmetto Bluff in South Carolina and Santa Lucia Preserve in California, in that order.

A golf community, as determined by the magazine's editors, must offer property owners an opportunity to join an affiliated private golf club. Properties are ranked in six categories including golf amenity; architecture and style of homes; and location.

The Jan./Feb. issue, now on newsstands, also includes a story about the just-reopened Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and its golf course upgrades.

T+L magazines and online publications are also known for reader surveys and T+L Golf will issue its annual “;World's Best Golf Resorts”; list in the September/October edition, according to publicist Liz Marsh.

New Editor

Former Honolulu Star-Bulletin news editor Steve Petranik will become Hawaii Business magazine editor Jan. 21.

He will remain the 24/7 local news editor at the Honolulu Advertiser through the inauguration and start his new gig the next day.

“;It is a great opportunity for me personally,”; he told TheBuzz. “;It is a very challenging time for Hawaii businesses, but with challenges come opportunities. Hawaii Business magazine wants to be able to help people get through these challenging times and succeed.”;

His 30-year news career includes 22 in Hawaii.

“;I've been doing a lot of different things in the news business and this sort of brings them all together.”;

Publisher David Tumilowicz is “;thrilled”; that Petranik will join the magazine.

“;The No. 1 quality (the team wanted) is a team-builder and a leader and I think we found that person in Steve.”;

Tumilowicz was amazed at the speed at which word of his new hire got around.

“;On our side, we were speaking in very hushed tones,”; he said, reflecting a core difference between magazine and newspaper cultures.

“;It really struck me that we're in a fundamentally different business, of providing perspective, as opposed to news,”; using the same facts, he said.

Petranik succeeds Kelli Abe Trifonovitch, who joined the office of State Auditor Marion Higa Monday as a senior analyst.

“;I'm really excited because of the mission of the office, which is to help government run more efficiently,”; she said. Higa is “;an outstanding public servant and I look forward to learning all I can from her.”;
