City officials request safety with fireworks

Fireworks go on sale legally Friday as city officials once again make their annual plea to the public to behave cautiously during the holiday season.

“;The holiday season is upon us,”; said Mayor Mufi Hannemann at a press conference yesterday with the city's emergency responders, including the Police, Fire and Emergency Services departments. “;With fun and entertainment also comes some dangers and possible hazards.”;

Officials urged residents to see professional fireworks shows rather than setting off fireworks themselves.

Fireworks go on sale the day after Christmas until midnight New Year's Eve in Honolulu. Officials reminded Oahu residents to abide by the law, which allows for fireworks to be set off from 9 p.m. Dec. 31 until 1 a.m. Jan. 1.

Oahu residents need to obtain a permit through any satellite city hall to purchase fireworks. They may buy multiple permits and fees are nonrefundable. Contact the city Department of Customer Services at 768-3798 for more information on satellite city halls.

Aerial fireworks are also prohibited for residents to use, according to state law.
