When you walk into Shear Creation in Waipahu, you might feel as though you're wearing pink sunglasses. But that's just Ruth Edgar's Christmas tree, adorned in everything pink, from lights to ribbon and ornaments. Jump to the conclusion that, with all the planning that must go into trimming a holiday tree from top to trunk in one color, it must be the same hue every year. You would be wrong.

“;Last year the tree was silver and purple, and then one year it was all green, and another all white,”; said Edgar. “;This year the (stylists) wanted to be girlie, so we went with pink. I had no choice. They just say.”;

Themed trees are not unusual for huge department store chains, but Edgar, who uses the same monochromatic decorating method at home, is just a conglomeration of one, owner of the small hair salon nestled in the Waipahu Professional Center. At the salon, the stylists select the colors, but at home, the kids are in charge of choosing, and this year, it's turquoise and royal blue.

Planning for the salon tree—which most patrons enjoy for just an hour or two each holiday season—starts about two years ahead, no matter what the color. Edgar shops after-Christmas sales and combines her new bargain finds with recycled items she keeps in storage.

She has labeled bins, barrels and boxes of stored Christmas decorations, in every color of the rainbow and then some. Her entire attic serves as closet for the tannenbaum's wardrobe, all dormant until November, right before Thanksgiving, when the lucky box whose color is called is retrieved.

“;I probably have about 12 colors in storage altogether—your gold, silver, green, red, blue, burgundy, pink, purple ... I have 12 main colors.”; Over the years, combinations of two in the palette have occasionally been called into service.

Some colors, however, never see the light of day. “;Burgundy ... we used it only once, and burgundy—with beige especially—is so Victorian and so beautiful, I don't know why,”; she said, pausing to reflect. And then laughs. “;When I ask the little ones, 'What color do you want this year?' I guess they only know (primary colors) and wouldn't yell out 'BURGUNDY!' “;
