What ever happened to the investigation of the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Thomas “;T.K.”; Kawahakui in July 2005 in Waialua?

Prosecutors are still investigating and cannot comment because it is an ongoing case, said Jim Fulton, spokesman for the Honolulu prosecutor's office.

Jackie Kawahakui, the victim's mother, is still trying to piece together what happened July 31, 2005. She speaks regularly with the prosecutor's office, which tells her to remain hopeful.

She asks anyone with information to come forward.

“;There's a wall of silence,”; she said. “;We need more information. Maybe people reluctant to say something will say something anonymously.”;

Kawahakui has been trying to put to rest rumors that perhaps discourage witnesses from talking. She said some people think the shooter has been caught already or that her son was wielding a knife when he was shot.

“;T.K. didn't have a knife and he wasn't wielding it,”; Kawahakui said.

On the morning of July 31, 2005, Thomas Kawahakui was shot to death after arriving at the house of an acquaintance. During the initial investigation, police said they believed that the acquaintance shot Kawahakui about four times with a rifle.

Kawahakui's mother said she believes her son argued with the man over the phone before arriving, but that did not warrant his death.

She believes the knife found at the scene was placed in her son's hand and that his body was dumped face down below the stairs before police arrived.

Police arrested the acquaintance but released him the following day, pending investigation. He was never charged with a crime.

Kawahakui said she believes there was a second gun that police did not find, one that left shotgun pellets in her son's car and flattened his tire.

“;I've just pursued this daily,”; she said of the unsolved killing. “;It's the first thing I think of when I wake up. I need to know what happened.”;
