Wet & Miserable

A cross Oahu yesterday, lives were abruptly disrupted by a Kona storm that in some areas dumped as much as 14 inches of rain in less than 24 hours.

Many people awoke to flooded homes, while commuters faced massive traffic jams and roads clogged by downed trees, minor accidents and, in some areas, rockslides.

Streams rose quickly and overflowed their banks throughout Central, Windward and Leeward Oahu.

Some of the heaviest flooding occurred in Wahiawa, Waianae, Makaha, Laie, Haleiwa, Waialua and Hauula. But no area was immune from the fierce wind and rain, with blown-off roofs reported in Honolulu and East Oahu.

The city and the American Red Cross opened several evacuation centers for displaced residents. Homeless campers on Leeward Coast beaches were forced to take shelter in public restrooms.

Today will be a day to clean up the mess left by yesterday's storm for many residents, who likely will be watching the skies in hopes that the forecast for more rain is all wet.
