1. Long to Lane
The Setup: Cincinnati 10, Hawaii 3, 11:45 remaining third quarter, Hawaii ball, first and 10 at Hawaii 39
The Play: WR Malcolm Lane gets a step-and-a-half on his man, and QB Greg Alexander finds him deep. Lane juggles the ball, secures it, and is downed on the Cincinnati 1 for a 60-yard gain.
The Impact: Hawaii ties the game after Dave Farmer takes it in for a 1-yard touchdown run.
Hawaii coach Greg McMackin: “;It was a game that in the first half we made some adjustments offensively. We went down and scored at the end of the first half and we were not as aggressive as we usually are. Then we came out at halftime and moved the ball.”;
2. Little man, big hit
The Setup: Hawaii 10, Cincinnati 10, 11:30 remaining, third quarter, Hawaii kicking off from own 30
The Play: Guyton Galdeira knocks the ball out of the hands of John Goebel at the Cincinnati 16. Jayson Rego recovers it and runs to the 5.
The Impact: Three plays later, Alexander throws a 2-yard touchdown pass to Lane and Hawaii leads for the first time, 17-10. Hawaii expands the lead early in the fourth quarter on another TD pass by Alexander, to Jon Medeiros. Galdeira's hit inspires the Hawaii defense, which allows just five first downs after halftime.
Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly: “;We played Oklahoma this year and I will tell you this football team in Hawaii hits you as hard if not harder.”;
3. Underwood's pick
The Setup: Hawaii 24, Cincinnati 10, 10:27 remaining, fourth quarter, Hawaii ball, second and 5 at Hawaii 18
The Play: Brandon Underwood intercepts a tipped Greg Alexander pass and returns it 20 yards for a touchdown.
The Impact: After sleeping through the third quarter and giving up 24 straight points, Cincinnati is revived and gradually takes control of the game.
Underwood: “;It was all odds against us and after (the interception), I felt a whole shift in the momentum for the whole game.”;
4. Safety
The Setup: Hawaii 24, Cincinnati 20, 5:05 remaining, fourth quarter, Hawaii ball, first and 10 at Hawaii 1
The Play: RB Daniel Libre is given the ball and runs outside left. He is hit and fumbles. Libre recovers the ball, but is downed by Drew Frey near the back of the end zone for a safety.
The Impact: Things get worse for Hawaii, which seemed on its way to a fourth straight win just a few minutes earlier. Cincinnati P Kevin Huber set up the safety with a 52-yard kick to pin Hawaii a few feet from its own goalline.
Alexander: “;Put this one on the offense; the defense played a hell of a game. We just didn't execute.”;
5. Mardy party
The Setup: Hawaii 24, Cincinnati 22, 4:59 remaining, fourth quarter, Cincinnati ball, first and 10 at Cincinnati 31
The Play: Backup QB Dustin Grutza rolls left, sees nothing, and heads to the right. He hits WR Mardy Gilyard wide open between the layers of Hawaii's zone defense. Gilyard runs down the sideline to complete the touchdown play.
The Impact: Cincinnati's biggest fourth-quarter comeback and Hawaii's biggest collapse are completed. On the ensuing kickoff, Hawaii is penalized back to its own 10 and generates negative yardage before punting the ball away. Cincinnati gets two first downs and takes a knee deep in Hawaii territory to finish it out.
Grutza: “;I tried to go to the boundary side, it wasn't open, felt a little pressure and escaped out and saw Mardy wide open.”;
