Man who died in cell is identified

HILO » A Big Island man who died in police custody Saturday while being held for trespassing and theft was identified by police yesterday as Barry Joseph Curl, 47, of Hilo.

Curl was arrested Friday morning and held in the single-occupant cell of the Hilo cellblock when he was unable to post $1,000 bail, police said.

He was discovered apparently lifeless at 3 p.m. Saturday, and his death was confirmed at Hilo Medical Center later in the day.

The case is classified as an unattended death. Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Section and officers from the Internal Affairs Division are conducting separate investigations.

An autopsy was scheduled but results were not immediately available.

2 sought in robbery of senior couple

Police are looking for a couple that allegedly robbed an elderly couple at gunpoint early Sunday in their Waianae home.

At about 5:30 a.m. a man and a woman in their early 30s allegedly entered a home belonging to a 85-year-old man and 83-year-old woman.

The man was holding a gun, and he and the woman demanded money, according to police. They left with the elderly woman's purse, police said.

The suspects then fled in a car. Police did not provide a description of the suspects.

 

CENTRAL OAHU

3 teens arrested in vehicle thefts

Police arrested three teenage boys yesterday who fled after a patrol officer tried to stop two vehicles for traffic violations in Mililani.

Police later found both vehicles and stopped the teens.

Seven juveniles fled from the cars on foot but were later caught and arrested, police said.

The vehicles were found to be stolen from a 44-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman.

Three of the juveniles admitted to driving the stolen vehicles, police said. They were arrested on two counts each of suspicion of car theft, unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and driving without a license.

They were released pending investigation.
