Hoshide Farms wins coffee event

Hoshide Farms has collected top honors in the Gevalia Kona Coffee Cupping Competition, which each year selects the top beans of the Kona harvest.

Hoshide, a 7-acre farm in Honaunau at the 1,700-foot elevation, is between a forest reserve and a bee farm, which owner Debbie Hoshide said provides “;a perfect combination of oxygenation and pollination.”;

Judges gave her coffee high marks for fragrance, and noted that its flavor was “;both sweet and tart.”;

Second place went to Kuaiwi Farm/Kona Old Style in Kealakekua; third place to Kona Rainforest Coffee located south of Captain Cook.

The blind tasting, held at Keauhou Beach Resort last week, drew 56 entries, each farm submitting a 50-pound sample from which five pounds were drawn for the competition. They were judged both green and roasted, on fragrance, aroma, taste, nose, aftertaste and body.
