Crash kills boy, injures 2 teenagers

A 12-year-old boy died on the Big Island yesterday after a one-vehicle crash in Kau.

Shortly before 2:14 p.m., a 17-year-old Naalehu boy was driving a 1994 Honda two-door sedan and was traveling north on Kamaoa Road when he lost control, struck a utility pole and overturned, police said.

Blaycen Jara of Naalehu was a passenger in the car and was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:52 p.m. Another passenger, an 18-year-old Naalehu man, was flown to the Hilo Medical Center in serious condition.

The driver was at the Kona Community Hospital in guarded condition. Police determined speed was a contributing factor in the crash. All three occupants were not wearing seatbelts, police said. Jara is the 24th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared with 35 at this time last year.

Fire damages Kauai classroom

Fire damaged a portable classroom at Wilcox Elementary School on Kauai last night, according to a news release from Kauai County.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 9:25 p.m. and put the fire out within 10 minutes, the release said. Damage was estimated at between $20,000 and $30,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Woman arrested in theft of tourist

A 19-year-old woman was arrested after allegedly stealing money from a sleeping tourist early yesterday morning.

The victim, a 31-year-old man, is a tourist in Waikiki and went with the suspect to her hotel room. Police said he fell asleep, and when he awoke he was missing money from his wallet.

Less than two hours later, a patrol officer along Kaiulani Avenue found a woman matching the suspect's description. The victim positively identified the suspect, who was arrested on suspicion of second-degree theft.

2 teens charged in July robbery

Two 17-year-old boys were charged Monday in a gunpoint robbery of two women in Kalihi in July.

The teens were charged with first-degree robbery. The two women, 19 and 20, were walking home at 2:30 a.m. July 15 when the two boys approached them.

One teen, armed with a black handgun, demanded money and took the 19-year-old's bag, police said. The other suspect took the 20-year-old woman's bag, according to police.

Police learned the suspects' names and one of them was identified in a photo lineup. The other was found Oct. 30 being held in a juvenile detention facility. He confessed his involvement to police and was arrested.

2 women in car robbed at gunpoint

Police are looking for a man who allegedly robbed two women at gunpoint in Honolulu on Friday.

Police said the man was wielding a firearm when he approached the women, ages 42 and 48, while seated in their car. He then allegedly demanded their belongings and fled with their car and belongings.

Police have opened a first-degree robbery case. The man is also suspected of two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening.

Man is sought for threatening woman

Police are looking for a 21-year-old Kailua man who allegedly threatened his ex-girlfriend with a handgun early Monday morning.

Police said the 19-year-old woman was going home from Haiku to Ahuimanu when her ex-boyfriend, who was driving a silver Acura, allegedly drove up to her and yelled at her, calling her names. He then allegedly followed her to Ahuimanu Place, allegedly pointed a black handgun at her and threatened to shoot her, then drove off, police said.

The incident occurred at 3:45 a.m. Monday along Kahekili Highway.

The suspect remains at large.

He is suspected of first-degree terroristic threatening.

Ex-boyfriend is arrested in attack

Police arrested a 27-year-old man Monday who allegedly went to his ex-girlfriend's Kailua workplace and shattered a window while she was inside her car.

Police arrested the man on suspicion of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and third-degree criminal property damage.

The man allegedly went to the 26-year-old woman's place of employment at Aikahi Shopping Center at 11:05 p.m. Oct. 29, and approached her in the parking lot, police said.

The woman locked herself inside the car, and he allegedly damaged her exterior rear-view mirrors and driver's window, shattering the glass and injuring her, police said.

She suffered a cut to her forehead, police said.
