Police seek 7 men after Kalihi attack

Police are looking for up to seven men in connection with the stabbing of a 45-year-old man in Kalihi shortly before 4:30 a.m. yesterday.

The victim was walking on North King Street near the Waiakamilo Street intersection when the men allegedly attacked him. Police said the victim tried to defend himself then ran Ewa on North King Street before he collapsed.

He was hospitalized in critical condition.

Child blamed in Aiea house fire

The Honolulu Fire Department says an Aiea townhouse fire that left eight people homeless Friday morning was caused by a child playing with a lighter.

The blaze, which engulfed most of the second floor of a home on Kaonohi Street, caused about $135,000 worth of damage.

A mother and her child were home at the time of the fire, but escaped without injuries.

The four adults and four children displaced by the fire are being helped by the Red Cross.

Teen in hospital after boat accident

A teenager was in critical condition yesterday after he was held underwater for five minutes when a sailboat overturned two miles off Waikiki, officials said.

Witnesses said the teenager got tangled in the canopy after the accident at about 5 p.m., said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Earle Kealoha.

An escort boat brought the victim back to shore.

Firefighters and paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the teen before he was taken to the hospital.

Big Isle man dies after vehicle crash

Speed and alcohol were likely factors in a head-on crash that killed a 28-year-old Pahoa man yesterday on the Big Island, police said.

The man was driving a 2003 Mazda sedan on Kahakai Boulevard in Hawaiian Beaches when he crossed the centerline and hit an oncoming 2008 Mazda multipurpose vehicle at about 4 a.m., police said. He was not wearing a seat belt.

The other driver, a 30-year-old Pahoa man, was treated for minor injuries.

The man was pronounced dead at 6:14 a.m. at the Hilo Medical Center. His name was withheld, pending notification of relatives.

It was the Big Island's 23rd traffic fatality, compared with 34 at this time last year.
