'Bizarre Foods' makes local stop

What kind of local food counts as bizarre enough for the Travel Channel's “;Bizarre Foods”; show?

Host Andrew Zimmern, known for his willingness to eat anything from bugs to a still-beating frog heart, debuted his Hawaii episode last week. He eats poi, octopus stew, wild boar, opihi, roast goat and—apparently the hardest thing for him to stomach—Spam musubi.

In a poll on www.andrewzimmern.com, viewers said the “;most un-Hawaii-ish”; food on the show was lavender.

The Hawaii episode repeats at 7 and 11 p.m. tomorrow and 4 p.m. Tuesday.

RESTAURANT REPORT

Fries to da max

As if french fries weren't dangerous enough, Hank's Haute Dogs introduces Duck Fat Fries, which are just what they sound like—potatoes fried in duck fat. Although Hank's description is more elegant: “;double-fried pomme frite style in rendered duck fat then lightly sprinkled with Alaea Hawaiian sea salt.”;

The specialty fries will be sold on weekends at Hank's, 324 Coral St. in Kakaako (not available in Waikiki), for $3.75. They mark the restaurant's first anniversary. Call 532-4265.
