AGGIE-nizing

POSTED: Sunday, November 02, 2008

LOGAN, Utah » Missed opportunities added up to a deflating loss for the Hawaii football team yesterday.

Hawaii went scoreless on four of its five trips into the red zone—including three opportunities inside the Utah State 9—and Utah State defeated the Warriors 30-14 before a crowd of 12,112 at Romney Stadium.

Utah State quarterback Diondre Borel completed 14 of 19 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 87 yards to lead the Aggies (2-7, 2-3 WAC) to their first win over Hawaii as a WAC member.

Hawaii quarterbacks Greg Alexander and Inoke Funaki led a Hawaii offense that racked up 374 total yards and outgained Utah State. But the Warriors couldn't overcome a series of miscues deep in Utah State territory.

“;We left too many points on the field,”; UH coach Greg McMackin said after the Warriors fell to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in WAC play in losing the front end of a two-game road trip.

The Warriors stay on the road this week and face New Mexico State on Saturday in Las Cruces. They must now go 3-1 down the stretch to become bowl eligible.

Utah State blocked two field goals in the first half yesterday and never trailed.

After the second block the Aggies took a 10-0 lead when Borel hit Nnamdi Gwacham for a 62-yard touchdown on the next play.

Hawaii broke through on its next drive when Alexander connected with Mike Washington for a 34-yard touchdown. But the Aggies ate up the remaining 6:20 of the half with a 15-play drive ending with a 34-yard field goal by Peter Caldwell to give Utah State a 13-7 cushion.

Hawaii appeared in position to tie or take the lead after Malcolm Lane's 46-yard kickoff return to open the half and Aaron Bain's 33-yard reception moved the Warriors to the Aggies 4. But Daniel Libre fumbled a pitch and Igboeli recovered for the Aggies.

After Utah State extended the lead to 20-7, Hawaii closed to within a touchdown with 7 minutes left on Alexander's 9-yard TD run.

But Borel's 61-yard run set up Caldwell's third field goal, and the Aggies closed the scoring with a 6-yard run by Robert Turbin.
