Palolo woman arrested in knifing

Police arrested a 32-year-old Palolo woman who allegedly slashed another woman's face with a knife on Tuesday in Honolulu.

At about 8:45 p.m., the woman attacked a 21-year-old woman from behind, grabbing her hair and cutting her, police said. She left after the victim's friend separated them.

Police arrested the older woman several hours later on suspicion of second-degree assault.

1 dead, 1 injured in Kauai car crash

A Kalaheo man was killed and a Koloa man was injured in a two-car crash on Kauai last night.

Rogelio Cesario, 23, was westbound in a sedan on Koloa Road in Koloa near the 3-mile marker at 8:22 p.m. when he crossed the centerline and struck a pick-up driven by J Paul Lee-Hornstine, 22, county officials said. Cesario died at the scene.

Lee-Hornstine was airlifted in stable condition to the Queen's Medical Center.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Police believe that speed was a factor in the crash, county officials said.

Cesario is the 11th traffic fatality on Kauai this year compared with nine last year.

Kauai brush fire doused by crews

LIHUE » One of the two roads into Kokee and Waimea Canyon was closed yesterday after a brush fire broke out yesterday afternoon.

The fire burned about two acres before being deemed under control at about 4 p.m., officials said. No one was injured and no structures were threatened, but firefighters were still putting out hot spots late yesterday afternoon.

It started at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday near Mile Marker 4 on Kokee Road, officials said.

Firefighters from four county stations as well as from the Pacific Missile Range Facility were called in to fight the blaze. The county contract helicopter was also doing water drops.

Ocean View man charged in attack

Big Island police charged a 34-year-old man in connection with the attempted murder of a 33-year-old man on Sunday in Kau.

Anthony Hartz of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates was charged with second-degree attempted murder and first-degree terroristic threatening. He is being held in lieu of $55,000 bail.

A 28-year-old Kealakekua woman also arrested in connection with the case was released yesterday pending investigation.

Isaac Couchie, 33, of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates was lured out of his house Sunday night and was riding his motorcycle in his driveway when a sport utility vehicle allegedly driven by Hartz hit him. Hartz got out and hit Couchie in the head with a football-size rock, police said.

Couchie was in stable condition yesterday.
