Flemings to miss first exhibition

Hawaii basketball fans hoping to catch their first glimpse of Roderick Flemings in action this weekend will probably have to wait a little longer.

The highly touted newcomer said yesterday he'll be flying back home (Dallas) to attend to an illness in the family and won't return until Monday. That would cause the forward to miss the Rainbow Warriors' first exhibition against Hawaii-Hilo on Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The team, which entertained boosters with a scrimmage and insight into Hawaii's offense yesterday, also plays an exhibition Nov. 7 against Chaminade. The season opener is Nov. 14 against San Francisco.

Hawaii placed 11th in the event, led by Corie Hou, who tied for 17th after her 3-under 69 yesterday put her at 6-over 222 for the tournament.

Hawaii Pacific edges Academy of Art

Hawaii Pacific nipped Academy of Art 25-20, 13-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-13 in a grueling volleyball match last night at McCabe Gym.

Natasha Bell's kill, her 13th of the night, gave the Sea Warriors a 14-13 lead in the fifth set, and HPU wrapped it up when the Urban Knights' Jelena Jakoljevic's attack hit the net.

Hawaii Pacific improved to 10-11, and Academy of Art dropped to 16-8.
