Kim is Junior All-American

Kimberly Kim of Arizona, formerly of Pahoa, was named a first-team Rolex Junior All-American by the American Junior Golf Association yesterday.

Kim, who attends Xavier College Preparatory School in Phoenix, was picked after placing in the top 10 in five national tournaments this season.

 

Rainbow Wahine move up to No. 8

Two wins by Hawaii and a loss by former No. 8 Florida helped the Rainbow Wahine move up a spot in yesterday's AVCA Coaches Top 25 women's volleyball poll.

The Rainbow Wahine (17-3, 10-1 Western Athletic Conference) are No. 8 after victories last week over San Jose State and Fresno State. The Florida Gators fell to No. 11 after losing to unranked Georgia.

The top seven teams remained the same, led by unanimous No. 1 Penn State (22-0). The Nittany Lions are followed by Nebraska, Texas, California, Stanford, Washington and Oregon.

Hawaii returns to WAC play Friday against Nevada. It's a “;UH Green Halloween”; promotion with children able to go trick-or-treating in the arena at candy stations manned by UH student-athletes from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Children receive a free ticket for the match with every paying adult.

» Hawaii freshman hitter Kanani Herring has legally changed her last name to Danielson.

The outside hitter has started 19 of the 20 matches for UH this season, averaging 3.05 kills and 2.92 digs per set while hitting .305 for the season.

“;This is something that I have been looking forward to finalizing for a long time,”; Danielson said in a statement released by the university. “;I have decided to take the name Danielson, the name of my stepfather William Danielson, because he is the man who raised me and the man I think of as my father. I'm just glad that this is now official because it has been in the making for a while.”;

The 2008 Kamehameha Schools graduate is a three-time state volleyball player, as well as the 2007 Volleyball magazine national player of the year.

 

Hawaii women earn exhibition victory

The Hawaii women's basketball team held off Brigham Young-Hawaii 66-60 last night in an exhibition game at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Rainbow Wahine guard Megan Tinnin scored a team-high 14 points, and forward Dita Liepkalne posted the team's best all-around performance with 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

“;We could definitely do a lot better, but it's the first game to help get the jitters out,”; said Tinnin. “;One game down. When we start on the Big Island (vs. Loyola Marymount, Nov. 14) we should be good.”;

The persistent Division II Seasiders kept the deficit around 10 points for most of the second half. Junior guard Mahina Gago was impressive in defeat, scoring a game-high 19 points on 5-for-9 shooting, and Latoya Wily added 15.

It was the only exhibition of the season for Hawaii.

Visiting teams lead Rose golf tourney

Valdosta State and Cal Baptist are in the lead after the first two rounds of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate golf tournament at the Mauna Lani North Course yesterday on the Big Island.

Valdosta State leads the men's team competition at 19-under 557, followed by St. Edward's (561) and Sonoma State (565).

Andrew Workman leads the individual competition at 10-under 134 after rounds of 68 and 69.

Hawaii-Hilo is in fifth place. The Vulcans' Stephen Zane is tied for 11th at 3-under 141.

Cal Baptist leads the women's team competition at 604, followed by Western Washington (606) and Chico State (611).

Defending champion Malin Thorberg of Cal Baptist is tied with Western Washington's Kaitlin Parker at 2-over 146.

Hawaii-Hilo's Nicole Aoki and Randi Ono are tied for 10th place at 10-over 154.

 

UHH tops Academy of Art in volleyball

Josimara Pinheiro had 17 kills to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 25-16, 25-23, 25-21 volleyball sweep of Academy of Art last night at Hilo.

Dan Yang lead Academy of Art (15-7) with 16 kills.

The Vulcans improved to 18-7.
