Pioneering local comics still wield crowd-drawing power

WITH all the additions to the local comedy scene, it's good to see that people continue to support those who laid the groundwork in recent years.

Island 98.5 morning jock Lanai Tabura is one of those individuals still on the grind. Last week, he headlined the closing night of “;Comedy on the Moon”; at Brew Moon with help from Shawn Felipe and Elroy Entendencia; OC-16's “;Bodyworks”; host Champ Kaneshiro was also there to keep the laughs going.

Don't get it twisted—Lanai and crew aren't getting kicked out of Brew Moon.

“;We will be back in January,”; he said. “;We took off for holiday parties and shows on the road.”;

In the meantime, check out the Ward Centre restaurant on Fridays for “;Music on the Moon”; (Super Dub 5 plays this week, followed by Ooklah the Moc on Oct. 24) and “;The Sauce”; every Saturday ...

Following months of travel across the continental United States in support of his latest mission as a public relations representative for the Navy Surgeon General, the physician returned to Hawaii to watch this year's Ironman Triathalon and host his second annual “;Andy Baldwin Youth Fitness Challenge.”;

Approximately 150 keiki, ranging in age from 3 to 12 years old, converged on Keiki O Ka Aina Learning Centers' Kalihi headquarters (the same property featured on ABC's “;Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”;) to participate in a four-part “;educational circuit.”; They learned about stretching and warming up before working out, how to check their heart rate, how to complete a proper push-up and the importance of eating healthy.

  CLUB NEWS: Hush Boutique Nightclub Lounge has quietly opened inside the Hawaiian Monarch Hotel's in preparation of a grand opening celebration later this month. According to owner and local nightlife veteran Raymond Ho, the 3,800 square foot space with a 19th century decor is “;multifaceted in culture, cocktails and functionality”; ... After initially opening with a standard 2 a.m. liquor license, The Shack Waikiki announced last week that they have secured a coveted cabaret license. Go Jimmy Go helped celebrate on Oct. 10, the first night drinks were served until 4 a.m. ... Flash and Matty Boy Present announced a new Hawaii residency for Las Vegas-based mash-up DJ Graham Funke. He'll spin at Pearl Ultra Lounge every third Friday, followed by a headlining set every third Saturday at the Hanohano Room ...

Head to Pipeline Cafe on Friday for an early evening of MMA action with Fighter's Corner and the Hawaii Amateur Pankration Association. On Saturday, MMAHawaii.com presents “;Destiny: The Beginning”; at the Waipahu FilCom Center. MMA fighters from Oahu, Maui and the Big Island will face off in a six-sided cage, and promoters will also give away a free car to someone in the audience. Call 381-2790 for details.

Saturday also brings a pair of autograph sessions with the UFC's “;Ultimate Fighter”; season six winner, Clay Guida. He'll sign first at Fighter's Corner from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by an appearance at Dave and Buster's during the live broadcast of UFC 89, which features current Hawaii resident Chris Leben facing Michael Bisping in the main event ...

  WEEKEND PICKS: Legendary house DJ Marques Wyatt returns to Honolulu for a headlining set on Friday at Lotus Soundbar. DJ Haboh will start things off around 9 p.m. ...”;Broken Liquid”; returns to Bar 35 on Saturday with resident DJs Saya and Toki joined by special guest DJs Cryptik and T.K.O. No cover for this one ... The Hyatt Regency Waikiki plays host to this month's installment of “;Gravy”; on Saturday.
