Gusman front and center for Rutgers soccer team

Rutgers junior Caycie Gusman (Kamehameha '06) has become the Scarlet Knights' go-to player in crunch time.

Gusman scored the game-winning goal for the third straight contest in a 1-0 win over Louisville last Friday and leads No. 15 Rutgers with eight goals this season.

Five of those goals have been game-winners, including one in the 85th minute against the Cardinals that helped the Scarlet Knights (10-3-1, 5-1-1 Big East) surpass last season's win total.

“;Caycie has always been great in the air,”; Rutgers coach Glenn Crooks said in the post-game recap. “;Prior to this season the majority of her goals were with her head. She times it very well and she has a real knack for that.”;

Gusman's six career game-winning goals are tied for the seventh most all-time at Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights finish the regular season with four straight road games beginning tonight at St. John's.

» St. Mary's (Calif.) junior midfielder Ashley Nied (Punahou '06) broke a 0-0 tie with her sixth goal of the season to lead the Gaels to a 2-0 victory over San Francisco. Four of Nied's six goals this season have been game-winning scores.

 

Football

» Oregon sophomore quarterback Jeremiah Masoli (Saint Louis '06) carried the ball 24 times for a game-high 170 yards and a touchdown in a 31-21 victory over UCLA. Masoli also threw a 24-yard touchdown pass.

» Brigham Young junior defensive tackle Ian Dulan (Kamehameha-Hawaii '06) had six tackles and a sack in a 21-3 victory over New Mexico to keep the eighth-ranked Cougars undefeated this season.

» Weber State quarterback Cameron Higgins (Saint Louis '06) was named Big Sky offensive player of the week for the third time this season. The sophomore completed 29 of 36 passes for 366 yards and four touchdowns in a 35-12 victory at Montana State. It was the fourth 300-yard passing game this year for Higgins, who has thrown for 2,138 yards and 23 touchdowns this season.

» Idaho freshman Kama Bailey (Damien '08) returned eight kickoffs for 171 yards, including a long of 39, in a 45-32 loss to Fresno State. Sophomore linebacker JoJo Dickson (Baldwin '07) finished with five tackles and a sack.

» Claremont-Mudd-Scripps junior wide receiver Michael Hirokawa ('Iolani '06) scored on a 1-yard touchdown run and had two catches for 15 yards in a 44-14 victory over La Verne. Defensive back Landon Patoc ('Iolani '06) added five tackles and a sack and Steven Dannaway (Punahou '06) and Adam Morris (Punahou '07) each had two tackles for the Stags.

» Linfield freshman defensive end Sparky Gonzalez (Saint Louis '08) had four tackles, including one for a 2-yard loss, in a 31-28 victory over Whitworth. Gonzalez is tied for second on the team with two sacks and has forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. Junior defensive tackle Ian Estrada (Kamehameha '05) also has six tackles this season and R.J. Kukahiko (Kamehameha-Maui '06) has three.

 

Women's Volleyball

» Sophomore outside hitter Kylie Harrington (St. Francis '07) led Nevada with a team-high 18 kills and added 12 digs in a four-set victory over Fresno State. Freshman Tatiana Santiago (Kamehameha '08) chipped in four assists.

» Washington junior libero Tamari Miyashiro (Kalani '05) had a match-high 30 digs in a five-set win over USC that snapped the Trojans' 32-match home winning streak. Miyashiro has 269 digs this season.

» St. Mary's (Calif.) sophomore setter Kepua Kamana'o ('Iolani '07) dished out 36 assists and junior middle blocker Megan Burton ('Iolani '06) had six kills and hit .500 in a three-set sweep over Portland. Kamana'o is averaging 11.75 assists per set this season, the sixth most in the country.

 

Women's Golf

» Santa Clara sophomore Miki Ueoka (Kauai '07) shot back-to-back rounds of 70 to win the Boise State Invitational Tuesday. Freshman Tammy Surtees (Hawaii Prep '08) finished in 23rd with a score of 155, and junior Jamie Nonaka (Punahou '06) shot 23-over 167 to tie for 58th place. The Broncos finished tied for first in the team standings.

» Kalaheo senior Gabby Whitworth will sign a letter of intent to play women's volleyball at the University of Albany (N.Y.).
