1. Passing fancy

The Setup: Hawaii 0, LaTech 0, 7:00 remaining, first quarter, Hawaii ball at Hawaii 37

The Play: B Inoke Funaki hits WR Malcolm Lane in full stride on a post pattern. Lane steps out of a tackle for a 53-yard gain.

The Impact: Funaki, who passes for a career-high 224 yards, scores on a 6-yard run two plays later, and Hawaii takes a 7-0 lead.

Funaki: ”;I think they were trying to let me throw hoping they could sit back in coverage.”;

2. Crashton

The Setup: Hawaii 7, LaTech 0, 1:10 remaining, first quarter, LaTech ball, third and goal at Hawaii 1

The Play: RB Patrick Jackson takes a toss and runs left toward the goal line. As he tries to extend the ball across the plane, LB Brashton Satele knocks the ball loose. DE John Fonoti picks it up and returns it to the Hawaii 6.

The Impact: LaTech went 76 yards on 13 plays, only to come up empty.

Hawaii linebacker Adam Leonard: “;That was huge for us. Brashton swung through the ball like we're taught in practice.”;

3. Blocked

The Setup: Hawaii 7, LaTech 0, 11:25 remaining, second quarter, LaTech ball, fourth and 9 at Hawaii 36.

The Play: K Brad Oestriecher tries a 53-yard field goal, which is blocked by DT Keala Watson.

The Impact: Another LaTech scoring opportunity is stymied on a big play by Hawaii. It was Hawaii's second blocked field goal in as many games.

Watson: ”;(Tua Mahaley) got one for the defensive ends, so I wanted to get one for the tackles.”;

4. Ad lib

The Setup: Hawaii 7, LaTech 7, 5:00 remaining second quarter, Hawaii ball, third and 7 at Hawaii 33

The Play: Funaki drops back, slides to his left and runs into LaTech defenders. He reverses his field, shedding two tacklers along the way, turns up field and gains 19 yards.

The Impact: The impromptu big play sets up Funaki's 25-yard touchdown pass to Greg Salas.

Salas: “;He's settling down and getting used to being the starter.”;

5. Keeping momentum

The Setup: Hawaii 14, LaTech 7, 3:49 remaining second quarter, Hawaii kicking off from Hawaii 30.

The Play: KR Phillip Livas makes a nice return close to midfield, but at the end of the run, R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane jars the ball loose and Desmond Thomas recovers for the Warriors at the LaTech 46.

The Impact: Three plays later, RB Kealoha Pilares scores on a 20-yard shovel pass and Louisiana Tech never gets back into the game.

LaTech coach Derek Dooley: ”;You can't win when you're minus three in turnovers. That was the difference in the game.”;
