Aquarium presents wide range of education programs for kids

The Waikiki Aquarium's fall educational programs offer children and families up-close experiences with ocean creatures. To enroll call 923-9741 or visit www.waquarium.org.

The 2008 fall schedule:

Small Fry: Parents and their 1- to 3-year-olds team up for an introduction to sea life. Five weekly sessions include crafts, songs, play and exploration of the exhibits. Cost is $80 per adult-child team ($50 for aquarium members). Sessions are 8:30 to 10 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, this week through Nov. 12.

Sea Stars: Learn about camouflage, locomotion, predators and prey in a three-session class for ages 3 to 5. Cost is $48 per adult-child team ($36 members). 3 to 4:15 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 22 to Nov. 5.

Exploring the Reef at Night: Search for crabs, shrimps, eels and octopus after dark. For ages 5 and up, accompanied by an adult. $12, $10 children ($10, $8 for members). 6 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 10 and 25 and Dec. 11, and 6:30 to 9 p.m. Jan. 9.

Ocean Arts! Holiday-Themed Ocean Crafts: Decorate a “;Fishmas”; tree with handmade clay ornaments; make “;Merry Fishmas”; cards, thank-you notes or gift tags; or create a three-dimensional scrapbook or calendar. All materials provided. For ages 6 and up, accompanied by adult. Cost is $10, $8 members. 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 11.

Aquarium After Dark: Discover if fish sleep, sea snails snooze or weedy sea dragons doze during a flashlight tour of aquarium exhibits. For ages 5 and up, accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration required. Cost is $10, $7 children ($8, $6 members). 7 to 9 p.m. Dec. 18 and 23.
