Sato Franklin S. Sigrah, 19, of 828 N. Judd St. was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree attempted murder and first-degree burglary. His bail was set at $500,000.

Jim Fulton, spokesman for the prosecutor's office, said there are at least two ways that Sigrah could be sentenced to life in prison without parole if convicted.

Sigrah made an initial appearance in District Court today. Many members of his family were there but did not speak to the media.

Sigrah allegedly tried to enter other apartments before gaining entry to Lyola Mesebeluu's apartment, where she slept along with her husband, Keith Mesebeluu, 26, and their 2-year-old daughter, Kia, police said.

Keith Mesebeluu was asleep in the living room when he heard his wife screaming, police said. He rushed into the bedroom and found a man standing over her wife, stabbing her repeatedly, police said. He disarmed Sigrah but was stabbed in the torso, police said.

According to the police affidavit, patrol officers responded to a call of a domestic argument at 2222 Kapiolani Blvd. at 4:10 a.m. When police arrived, neighbors pointed them to No. 11 on the third floor.

Police entered the open door and found Lyola Mesebeluu lying on the floor with blood on her torso, Sigrah on the kitchen floor covered in blood and Keith Mesebeluu standing near the bedroom door also covered in blood. A younger man, who had no blood on him, was also in the apartment.

Gesturing toward Sigrah, Keith Mesebeluu told police, “;He stabbed me and my family,”; the affidavit said.

He told police his family did not know Sigrah.

Mesebeluu, his wife and his daughter, who suffered a cut to her arm, were all taken to the Queen's Medical Center, where Lyola Mesebeluu died at 6:10 a.m. Saturday. Keith Mesebeluu was in serious but stable condition, and his daughter was in good condition.

Police found a large kitchen knife, believed to be the murder weapon, at the scene.

Fulton said prosecutors are seeking an enhanced sentence of life without parole, the toughest penalty in Hawaii, for Sigrah if convicted because of the multiple offenses and the attack on a minor.

Sigrah, who has no prior convictions, also faces life in prison without parole if convicted of first-degree attempted murder.
