Two residents were awarded the Honolulu Police Department's highest civilian award for their role in saving a woman trapped in a burning car.

On Feb. 5, an 87-year-old woman's vehicle was speeding and crashed into a rock wall at the Pali Lookout. The car began to burn, but Michael Fujimori, Julie Hengel and an unidentified female visitor were able to pull her out. Moments later, the vehicle burst into flames.

During a ceremony yesterday, Fujimori and Hengel were awarded the Police Department's Civilian Medal of Valor. Also honored were:

» Mural artist Ron Artis, who received a letter of appreciation for his work beautifying walls in Waialua and Wahiawa.

» Officer Gordon Gomes Jr., who received a Certificate of Merit for administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation on an 18-year-old man with a heart condition during a Waikiki Shell concert.

» Officers Gary Montalbo Jr., Wilson Atud, Donn Manzanao and Joselito Obena, who were recognized for saving the life of a man who collapsed in an Aiea Starbucks. Montalbo received a Certificate of Merit, while the others received letters of commendation.

» The Juvenile Service Division's Education Unit was honored as the Unit of the Quarter, thanks to its drug- and gang- resistance programs.
