Waipahu wins in Waianae

By

POSTED: Saturday, October 04, 2008

Troy Matautia showed the Leeward Coast his throwing arm can be as dangerous as his formidable legs.

A momentum-turning trick play followed by a huge turnover led to a stunning 28-15 Waipahu victory over No. 4 Waianae on a quiet homecoming night for the Seariders.

Matautia ran for 174 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries, but his biggest contribution of the night came when he took a pitch from Marauders quarterback Josh Lacar - who then rolled out to the left - and lobbed a spot-on pass to the signal-caller-turned-receiver, who sprinted along the sideline 33 yards for the go-ahead score to convert on fourth and 9 with 3 minutes left.

“;We practiced that all week, we know these guys are great,”; said Matautia, a senior, who was Waipahu's full-time quarterback last season. “;We had a good week, but we just gotta work harder.”;

The win snapped the four-game winning streak of Waianae (4-3, 4-1 Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West) and gave Marauders (5-2, 3-2) coach Sean Saturnio his first victory over the Seariders in three tries. The teams had not played since 2003 as Waipahu had been in the OIA White over that span until this season.

“;This is for all the guys who worked so hard to build (the program) and get us back to the Red,”; Saturnio said. “;These young men believe in themselves. Troy, Josh Lacar making reads, our O-line was phenomenal. And boy, did that defense rise.”;

Waipahu prevented Waianae from clinching at least a share of the OIA Red West title and the division's top seed heading into the OIA playoffs.

Waianae, which managed an upset of its own against then-No. 2 Leilehua last week, had a good chunk of clock to work with to go for the tie or win on its home field. But the Seariders fumbled on the kickoff return - their third lost fumble of the game - and Waipahu defensive lineman Haven Tuisamatatele was right on the spot to collect the special teams turnover at the Waianae 15.

“;I seen the DB drop 'em, and I just went fight for the ball,”; Tuisamatatele said with a wide grin as his teammates piled onto the visitors' buses.

After the big turnover, Matautia punched in a 5-yard insurance touchdown with 1:18 left, and the home crowd started leaving Raymond Torii Field.

The Waianae loss overshadowed another strong game from running back Danny Kekoanui, who went for 120 yards and two first-quarter touchdowns to stake the Seariders to a 15-7 halftime lead. But the senior went out injured in the third quarter and did not return, and Waianae sorely missed his presence in the backfield.

In the first quarter, Matautia sprung loose up the middle on the second Marauder play after Waianae's first score and ran unscathed 60 yards to even things up at 7. He added a 10-yard run and 2-point conversion in the third quarter to knot things at 15.
