Kamp Hawaii recognizes Chong, Kamau

KAMP Hawaii, a program reaching out to at-risk youngsters, honored physical therapist Elroy Chong and George Kamau of the Farrington athletic program for their dedicated service at a fundraiser Thursday at the Willows. Kamp Hawaii was started by Aaron Kamau, George's son. Danny Kaleikini, representing Mayor Mufi Hannemann, presented the Mayor's Award to the honorees. Tom Moffatt ran an oldies dance contest and donated tickets to the upcoming Neil Sedaka show. Rodney Villanueva emceed the event, attended by more than 200 people ...

Shannell Ashley Sarme

Shannell Ashley Sarme, 18, won the first Miss Lanai title last Saturday and will compete in the 2009 Miss Hawaii Pageant. Shannell is a student at Kapiolani Community College. The event was held at the Four Seasons Manele Bay Resort on Lanai. Tom Roelens, G.M. of the resort and Four Seasons' Lodge at Koele, was one of the judges. Other judges were singer Nohelani Cypriano; Candes Gentry, Miss Hawaii 1998; KHON's Trini Kaopuiki, Miss Hawaii USA 1999; Matt Jones, owner of Body by Matt; DJ Grant “;Lanai”; Tabura, and California's Redlands Theater Festival producer Cliff Cabanilla. Jennifer Hera Pimentel, Miss Hawaii 1998, was executive director the pageant. Her mom, Patricia Hera, was the associate director. Emcee was Billie Takaki Lueder, Miss Hawaii 2000 ...

Town restaurant's owner-chef Ed Kenney and wife Kristen “;Spanky”; Kenney challenged Sacred Hearts' digital photography high school students to picture daily life in Kaimuki, from Chaminade U. to 11th Avenue, for an exhibition. Honolulu has been selected to be one of the cities in which movie theaters have agreed to show same-day high definition transmission of live opera performances from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. All screenings will start at 2 p.m. in Dole Cannery Regal Theatre No. 18.
