1. Double pass

The Setup: Hawaii 0, San Jose State 0, 10:43 remaining, first quarter, San Jose State ball, second and 18 at San Jose State 23

The Play: RB Brandon Rutley takes a direct snap from center and throws a backward pass to QB Kyle Reed, who was aligned in the left slot. Reed throws deep to WR David Richmond, behind the Hawaii secondary. Richmond easily completes the 77-yard touchdown play.

The Impact: San Jose jumps out on top early with a successful trick play on its first possession, but manages just 237 total yards for the game.

Hawaii coach Greg McMackin: “;You take away the trick play and our defense played very well. I'm proud of our players.”;

2. Sprung loose

The Setup: San Jose State 7, Hawaii 0, 9:02 remaining, first quarter, Hawaii ball, first and 10 at San Jose State 34

The Play: RB Kealoha Pilares takes a handoff, and keyed by a block at the point of attack by pulling RG Clarence Tuioti-Mariner, he sprints through the defense and into the end zone.

The Impact: Pilares scores again later in the first half as UH takes a 17-7 halftime lead. But on the second touchdown, a 1-yard run, Pilares suffers a concussion and leaves the game.

San Jose State coach Dick Tomey: “;We made a few adjustments (at halftime) to help us with the shovel pass because they gashed us with a couple things. Inoke's ability to run was real difficult. But we have a good defense; guys with the ability to make plays. We have some secondary guys with good instincts.”;

3. Kick out

The Setup: Hawaii 17, San Jose State 7, 0:57 remaining, third quarter, Hawaii ball, third and 9 at Hawaii 21

The Play: LB Kyler O'Neal leaps and kicks the ball out of the hands of QB Inoke Funaki. O'Neal recovers at the Hawaii 8.

The Impact: One of five Hawaii second-half turnovers (six for the game) sets up San Jose State's first score since early in the first quarter, as Reed hits WR Jeff Clark in the right corner of the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown.

McMackin: “;You can't win when you turn the ball over six times.”;

4. From bad ...

The Setup: Hawaii 17, San Jose State 14, 10:53 remaining, fourth quarter, Hawaii ball, third and 2 at Hawaii 38

The Play: Funaki underthrows blanketed WR Greg Salas, and the ball goes right into the hands of CB Coye Francies. San Jose State takes over at the Hawaii 26.

The Impact: San Jose State fails to move the ball, but Jared Strubeck - who missed earlier from 47 yards - makes a 50-yard field goal to tie the game.

Funaki: “;I feel like a big part of it was me, all the turnovers. We turned the ball over, too many turnovers in that second half.”;

5. ... to worse

The Setup: San Jose State 17, Hawaii 17, 2:47 remaining, fourth quarter, Hawaii ball, first and 10 at Hawaii 8

The Play: QB Tyler Graunke, who relieved Funaki on the previous series, throws a pass across the middle that is intercepted by LB Duke Ihenacho, giving San Jose State the ball at the Hawaii 30.

The Impact: Hawaii holds San Jose State to no gain on three downs, but Strubeck hits a 47-yard field goal for the winning points. He entered the game 3-for-8 on field goals for the season.

Strubeck: “;It feels great knowing Coach still believes in me. It was such a dire situation and we needed a kick even though I've struggled.”;
