Male and female wave masters team up for tandem surf contest
The best in partner athletics on the waves will be featured at the 3rd Annual World Title of Tandem Surfing, one of the highlights of the Duke OceanFest in Waikiki.
The unique sport requires precision and strength as men apply sophisticated acrobatic lifts to their female counterparts, all while surfing. Its origins were in the early 1900s, when Duke Kahanamoku and other beach boys would hoist women onto their shoulders while riding into shore.
Other lifts would be developed later at Muscle Beach in California. The International Tandem Surfing Association recognizes 60 of these lifts.
Men and women ranging in ages from 18 to 65 have competed for the crown of world champion, as well as titles in the grand masters, masters and open divisions. More than 30 teams are scheduled to compete this year.
The schedule includes an opening day exhibition Sunday, a lift challenge Tuesday and the contest, which starts Wednesday.
