Michigan State opened the inaugural Pearl Harbor Classic with a win over Pepperdine, but host Brigham Young-Hawaii almost stole the show in the nightcap.

The Seasiders (4-2) outplayed Oregon State (5-1) for 47 minutes before they let an 11-0 run in the final three minutes bury them, 50-45. Paulasi Matavao led the Seasiders with 14 rebounds and helped them to a slight 35-31 edge over their bigger Division I foes. The Seasiders attacked the boards relentlessly, redirecting the ball out of the Beavers' grasp when their lack of size wouldn't let them pull it down.

"They are a much bigger team," Brigham Young-Hawaii head coach Al Walker said. "We did a great job of going after the ball but missed on a few crucial rebounds late in the game."

But rebounding is not what cost them the game.

The Seasiders led by six points with three minutes left when they learned that heart would not be enough to carry them over the top. Beaver point guard Deaundra Tanner exploded for five points in the next minute to cut the Seasiders' lead to one. BYUH slowed the pace of the game but allowed Clifton Jones to sink two free throws with 1:02 left to give the Beavers a 46-45 lead -- the first time that Oregon State had led in the second half.

Then the Seasiders self-destructed.

Trailing by one and trying to set up an open shot with 41 seconds left in the game, BYUH swingman David Evans flattened a Beaver.

Oregon State guard Ramunas Petraitis chased his man through the lane when he ran into and collapsed from the force of Evans' elbow. Officials called the shot intentional and awarded Oregon State two technical foul shots and the ball, which the Beavers used to run the lead to 48-45 with 20.1 seconds left.

A Seasider team that had been living on heart and miracles ran out of both when Isaac Gornichec slipped while setting up for the game-tying shot and lost the ball to Tanner with 10.2 seconds left. Tanner swished two free throws to ice the game.

"They outplayed us throughout the game," Oregon State head coach Eddie Payne said. "We are relieved that they handed it to us like they did."

bullet No. 15 Michigan State 79, Pepperdine 67: In the opener, the Spartans (7-3) struggled through a run-and-gun first half but settled down to shoot down the Waves (6-4).

Michigan State committed 10 first half turnovers before Mateen Cleaves settled them down to a mistake-free second period. Cleaves finished with 16 points and only three assists.

Morris Peterson came off the bench to lead all scorers with 18 points and rebounders with seven -- half of Pepperdine's total for the game.

"Teams funnel around Cleaves and try to stop him," Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said.

"It helps him that Peterson can play everywhere and hit the shots."

The nationally ranked Spartans face Tulsa (10-1) today at 3 p.m. at the Cannon Activities Center in Laie.

bullet Tulsa 84, Texas Tech 50: Micheal Ruffin led the Golden Hurricane to a romp of the Red Raiders (6-4) with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Ruffin dominated the paint, blocking three shots but altering many more.

The Golden Hurricane held Texas Tech to 28 percent shooting from the field and 14 percent from beyond the arc. Brandon Kurtz helped Ruffin inside with 12 rebounds and 14 points while point guard Greg Harrington chipped in 16 points and 11 assists.

"I think this is the best game we have played all year," Tulsa head coach Bill Self said. "Ruffin set the tone down low and we capitalized on it."

bullet Alabama 84, Weber State 80: The Crimson Tide (8-2) outlasted the Wildcats (7-4) in overtime on the strength of Brian Williams 34 points on 10-24 shooting.

Williams rescued Alabama and sent the game into overtime when he hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with 22 seconds left in regulation. Harold Arceneaux led the Wildcats with 24 points and nine rebounds but couldn't help his team after he fouled out with 3:05 left in overtime and his team down by one. The teams traded the lead until Alabama guard Chauncey Jones put back a Williams miss to give the Tide an 81-79 lead they would never relinquish.

Fresno Pacific tips HPU;
Chaminade falls

Elan Buller hit 11 of 13 shots from the floor to finish with 26 points as Fresno Pacific held off Hawaii Pacific, 69-68, in the opening round of the HPU Christmas Tournament at Blaisdell Arena.

Willie Flowers scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half as HPU climbed out of an early 20-point hole. The Sea Warriors trailed, 34-22, at halftime.

With HPU down one point with one second left, guard Shannon Lee was fouled. He missed the front end of the 1-and-1, however, and time ran out.

HPU plays Azusa Pacific, a 109-86 winner over Carthage College last night.

Bullet Wichita St. 80, Chaminade 51: At Wichita, Kan., Maurice Evans and Jason Perez scored 17 points each as the Shockers (4-5) crushed the Silverswords (3-6).

Wichita State led 39-29 at the half and then put the game out of reach with eight straight points to open the second half on 3-point shots by Bart Westgeest and Perez and a field goal by Carl Lemons.

Evans, who entered the game as the nation's top scorer with a 26.6 point average, drew two personal fouls in the first half and scored only five points in six minutes. He scored 12 in the second half.

Chaminade got a team-high 16 points from Timi Berkovitch before he fouled out on a technical foul with 6:29 left.

John Krafels added 15 points for the Silverswords.
