Three Hawaii surfers
win Pipe Masters
opening heats

Andy Irons, Sunny Garcia and Shane Dorian of Hawaii won their first-round heats in the Mountain Dew Gerry Lopez Pipe Masters surfing meet yesterday in 6- to 8-foot sets at the Banzai Pipeline.

Other first-round heat winners were American Rob Machado and Brazilian Peterson Rosa.

Kauai surfers Bruce Irons and Braden Dias advanced through four rounds of trials to claim the only two wildcard spots in the main event.

The Pipe Masters is the final jewel in the Vans G-Shock Triple Crown of Surfing and the final event on the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour.

Tour rookies Michael Campbell and Daniel Wills of Australia are 1-2 in the chase to determine a new world champion. Five-time world champ Kelly Slater is third, followed by Shane Beschen, Mark Occhilupo and Dorian.

CHRISTMAS DINNER FOR 1,500: Bowl Games of Hawaii will celebrate its historic Jeep Aloha Bowl/Jeep Oahu Bowl football doubleheader with a traditional Christmas buffet dinner for 1,500 fans in the hour between the two Dec. 25 games.

Cost for the dinner is $16 for adults and $8 for children under 11 (tax included). Reservations are limited to the first 1,500 who make reservations. For reservations and more information, call Bowl Games of Hawaii at 947-4141.
