Kailua’s defense rises

If Kailua's defense continues to play throw shutouts at its opponents, banged-up Rocky Alo may not evenbe needed for the playoffs.

Kailua blanked visiting Kalaheo, 12-0, in the first round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs last night.

After forcing the Mustangs to punt on their opening possession, Kailua used its new running back-by-committee approach and a crafty Chico Cantiberos snap count to drive 91 yards for a score.

Cantiberos ended the 18-play drive by sneaking in from the one to give the Surfriders a 6-0 lead.

The lead was never threatened because the Kailua defense held Kalaheo to 86 total yards and forced two turnovers, while not allowing the Mustangs to venture farther into Kailua territory than the 25-yard line.

"We played tremendous shut out football," Kailua head coach Darren Johnson said. "The defensive staff worked our kids hard all week and it showed."

Cantiberos was plagued by an inaccurate arm and dropped passes by his receivers, but made up for it with two interceptions as a defensive back and remained poised in the face of a tough Kalaheo defense.

Fellow defensive back Roger Majit-Gorion covered his receiver so completely that the action was forced to Cantiberos' side of the field.

Kailua defensive lineman Makahaa Wolfgram repeatedly penetrated the Mustangs' backfield to force Kalaheo quarterback Kala Lopes into bad decisions.

Kailua played a complete defensive game, holding Kalaheo running back Reyn Gibson to 31 yards on 14 carries and Lopes to 10 for 21 passing for only 49 yards.

Kailua iced the game with 7:48 left when running back Keone Brown waltzed into the end zone from 3 yards out. Cantiberos put the Surfriders in position for the score with a 39-yard pass to tight end Jacob Kapono, who rumbled inside the 15-yard line before being pushed out of bounds.

Kailua moves on to play Roosevelt in the second round, but won't rest on last night's fine defensive performance.

"We made too many mistakes tonight to beat either of those teams," Johnson said. "But I believe that we will be ready."
