A young shoulder to lean on

What sets 8-year-old Brittney Basilio apart from other students is her compassion and ability to get along so well with peers, said Basilio's third-grade teacher, Dale Yoshizu.

"She's mature beyond her years," Yoshizu said. "If students need help, she'll be there to help someone. If someone needs a shoulder to lean on, she's there. She'll do it in a quiet way. She's just an outstanding student and person."

A third-grader at Waialua Elementary School, Basilio excels particularly in math and reading and gets good grades, he said. On a six-point grading scale, Basilio consistently scores fives and sixes on her report card.

Aside from doing well academically, Basilio participates in many extracurricular activities. She plays soccer for the Area Youth Soccer Organization and attends Waialua United Church of Christ with her family.

Basilio also recently took up piano lessons.

"It's fun," she said. "I'm not that good but I'm a little good."

Basilio thought about being a doctor someday but changed her mind. Now she wants to be a teacher.

No matter what she ends up doing, Basilio will be successful, Yoshizu said.

"I enjoy teaching such a responsible girl like Brittney," he said. "Brittney is certainly a super student and person.

"Every teacher should have the opportunity to teach such a well-rounded student."
