Woven baskets, music, crafts and food will be part of the
festivities at the Pacific Island Festival.
Visitors will enjoy music and dance, arts and crafts demonstrations, a cooking demonstration by A Pacific Cafe chef Jean-Marie Josselin, and more, as they learn about Tonga, Papua New Guinea and Fiji.
There will be opportunities throughout the event to learn how to design kapa, carve tikis of wood, make necklaces of bone and weave lauhala baskets. If you're not artistically inclined, a craft fair will feature many items for sale, such as kava bowls, tapa fans and woven baskets.
In addition, there will be a kava ceremony taking place from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday. Visitors will be able to sample this kava root drink, renowned for its relaxing properties.
And from noon to 1 p.m. Sunday, Josselin will present "A Taste of Tonga," featuring such indigenous Tongan ingredients as vanilla, yams and breadfruit.
Hours for the festival are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Admission is free. There will be door prizes given away Saturday and Sunday, and visitors may enter a drawing to win a round-trip, six-day stay in Tonga.
