Survey to gauge health of Molokini's coral reef
State biologists and University of Hawaii students this weekend conducted a quarterly underwater survey at Molokini Island to gauge the health of the area's coral reef and examine the effects of high traffic at the tourist attraction.Skippy Hau, a state Department of Land and Natural Resources aquatic biologist, said Molokini is a magnet for the growing ocean recreation industry, drawing an average of 500 to 1,000 snorkelers per day, depending on the season.
Hau is concerned about the usage because of the significant anchor damage boaters have done to the reef system.
