Chico Cantiberos hit Ryan Extrom for a seven-yard touchdown pass with 1:18 left in the game as unbeaten Kailua pulled out a 23-20 win over Mililani in an Oahu Interscholastic Association White Conference game last night.

"We came out flat and Mililani played great," Surfrider head coach Darren Johnson said. "We were lucky to escape this one."

Mililani ran out to a 20-8 lead after Gavin Ng scored on a 9-yard run with 11:02 left in the game. Ng matched Surfrider Rocky Alo -- the conference's leading rusher -- step-for-step and carried the Trojans, rushing for 100 yards on 24 carries.

Kailua responded to being down by doing what it does best. The Surfers ran off a 16-play drive and pulled within five points when Billy Winchester bulled in from the 2-yard line with just under five minutes left.

Cantiberos was called on to save the drive twice, with 10-yard passes to Extrom on a third and long and a fourth and seven. Cantiberos also converted a fourth and inches on a sneak to set up Winchester's score.

Kailua forced the Trojans to punt from midfield on their next possession, and the snap sailed high over Mililani punter Andrew Brown's head. Brown retreated 35 yards before fielding the ball and booting it out of bounds while on the run. The error gave Kailua the ball at the Mililani 22-yard line with 2:26 to play.

Alo struggled for running room all night long before he broke away on a 15-yard run to set up the winning score. Alo spent most of the first half blocking for Keoni Brown and a host of other Kailua running backs.

Alo finished with 139 yards on 24 carries. Brown carried the load in the first half, rushing nine times for 57 yards.

"This win is big," Johnson said. "The guys showed a lot of character battling back in a tight game."

Kailua improved to 5-0 going into a bye next week and Mililani dropped to 3-2.
