


Michael Castillo and Kevin Hayashi advanced to the final of the Aloha Section PGA Match Play Championship at Maui's Wailea Gold Course with two victories each yesterday. Castillo, Hayashi in
match play finalCastillo defeated his brother Ron Castillo Jr., the defending champion, 2-and-1 in the quarterfinals, then pulled out a 2-and-1 semifinal victory over Andrew Feldmann.
Hayashi, the Aloha Section stroke play champ and 1998 player of the year, beat Doug Bohn, 2-and -1 before outshooting Marc Orlowski, 2-up, on the 18th hole of their semifinal match.
UH SOCCER TEAM 10TH IN WEST: The unbeaten University of Hawaii women's soccer team are ranked No. 10 in the latest Soccer Buzz West Region poll.
The Wahine are 5-0, one of 14 unbeaten teams in NCAA-I play.
They travel to California this weekend to take on Idaho State and Cal State Sacramento in the Sacramento Tournament.
WAHINE PLACE HIGH IN GOLF MEET: Kathy Cho shot a final-round 75 to tie for fifth place and Linda Appelblad also had a 75 for a share of seventh as the University of Hawaii women's golf team finished fourth yesterday in the 14-team Heather Farr Memorial Tournament at Louisville, Colo.
Cho had an 8-over-par 224 total for 54 holes and was five shots behind individual champ Anna Hokkanen of team winner North Carolina-Greensboro.
The UH men's golf team, led by sophomore Bret Parker's fifth-place finish, wound up 12th yesterday in the Pacific Invitational at Copperopolis, Calif.
Parker shot a third-round 60 for a 209 total, four shots behind individual winner Jason Preeo of Pacific.
North Texas won the team title.
JIU-JITSU TOURNAMENT: Some 150 athletes from Japan, Switzerland, Australia, Brazil and the United States will compete in the seventh annual Gracie Jiu-Jitsu International Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Kaiser High School.
Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 9:15 a.m., to be followed by a rules clinic and then competition in the various belt and weight divisions. Admission is $5, with children under 15 admitted free.
There is a $40 registration fee for all competitors.
Registration/weigh-in/package pick-up is Friday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Gracie Academy, 1211 Koko Head Avenue.

PLAYER JOINS KAANAPALI FIELD: Golfing great Gary Player has committed to play in the Oct. 19-25 EMC2 Kaanapali Classic on Maui.
Player, 62, won the Northville Long Island Classic recently and has more than 160 tournament victories worldwide.
Dana Quigley, who won the Emerald Coast Classic earlier this month, and Spain's Jose Maria Canizares also have joined the Kaanapali field.
BODYBOARDING BIGGIE AT PIPELINE: Nine-time world champion Mike Stewart of Hawaii and 1997 world titlists Guilherme Tamega and Daniela Freitas of Brazil are among some 200 bodyboarders scheduled to compete in the sport's richest-ever contest -- the $70,000 Morey World Bodyboarding Championships Jan. 4-12 at the famed Banzai Pipeline on Oahu's North Shore.
The 17th annual Morey event will feature a Global Organization of Bodyboarders-sanctioned five-A men's competition and a seven-A women's division.
ISLE WOMEN IN TENNIS NATIONALS: A Honolulu women's team will be among 17 from around the country competing in the United States Tennis Association League Tennis 4.0 Adult National Championship tournament Oct. 15-18 at Tucson, Ariz.
Members of the Hawaii team are Margaret Peebles, Debbie Story, Connie Chilton, Loretta Damas, Barbara Nakata, Diana Seppelfrick, Stephanie Matsunaka and Renee Ishida.
