Tommy Lee cues
up in islesYOU could almost hear the theme song from "Cops": "Bad boy, bad boy, whatcha gonna do when they come for you..." No, we're not talking about the gambling bust on Mel Cabang, but did anyone else think it odd he'll be serving his sentence near Las Vegas? No, it was that real bad boy, Tommy Lee, fresh from doing time of his own, reveling in the Waikiki nightlife. The Motley Crue drummer, who starred in an anything-goes home movie with his bride, Pamela Anderson Lee, was later sent up the proverbial river for slugging her. He's out now, and there he was the other night shooting pool in the Red Lion on Lewers until 4 a.m. He was accompanied by two blondes, neither of whom was Pamela...
BACK in the Midwest many moons ago, the Montgomery Ward or Sears catalog could often be found in the outhouse, and not just for the purposes of having reading matter on hand. Times have changed. "The Book" is the lofty title of the Neiman Marcus catalog, and it carries a $10 price tag. The October issue has a 10-page spread on Hawaii, not all of which is devoted to the new store at Ala Moana. There are also some lovely photos, particularly of neighbor island resorts, where N-M customers are likely to find themselves...
SPEAKING of Ala Moana, look for the opening there of Row Bar II, an extension of the popular bar located in the middle of Restaurant Row. Like that one, the new bar will also be managed by Paul Robotti. It's due to open next month by the Food Court just under Neiman Marcus...
News from London
BESIDES being perhaps the most respected theater critic in London, Sheridan Morley manages to keep busier than any six people I know. We met in 1963 when he was a graduate assistant in the theater department at UH, and now he informs me that aside from the two radio programs he hosts and theater reviews he writes for the International Herald Tribune and other publications, he's completed a book on producer Cameron Mackintosh and he's working on another about actor John Gielgud. The latter includes a picture of him and me greeting Gielgud in '63 when the actor stopped off at Honolulu airport en route to Australia. Sherry's musical revue, "Noel and Gertie," starring Twiggy, continues to tour the U.S. after a record-setting engagement at Sag Harbor in the Hamptons. It's due to open off-Broadway in January...ADMAN Dave Reed has been very quiet on the advertising front of late, but now he's resurfaced and looking for a new position in the industry. I like to think he and I are responsible for the success of Mililani, since it was about 30 years ago he produced the new community's radio spots and I voiced them, ending with, "Come, live with us." Well, people did! ...
Life is a Cabernet
MANY members of the venerable Pacific Club remain remarkably sanguine about everything, and are rarely out and out impressed. But there was much praise heaped on guest chef Philippe Padovani for providing members with a glimpse of the Mediterranean bistro cuisine diners can expect when the former Halekulani and Manele Bay Hotel chef opens his Bistro & Wine Bar at the Alana Hotel in November. Pado-vani's gourmet menu accompanied a vertical tasting of Mondavi Opus One, beginning with the 1988 vintage and including a preview of the 1995 release. Joining Philippe in planning that evening were partner J.P. Damon and brother Pierre Padovani, who took advantage of the Pacific Club's steam oven to prepare five types of bread for the occasion...
