


University of Hawaii junior Heather Bown has been named the volleyball Player of the Week in the Pacific Division of the Western Athletic Conference. Bown is WAC
Player of the WeekBown, a 6-foot-3 middle blocker from Yorba Linda, Calif., averaged 5.5 kills per game, helping the UH women win two of three matches last weekend to claim the tournament title in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic.
She had 18 kills on 21 attempts and no errors in a victory over UCLA and had 26 kills and six blocks in a loss to Florida.
Rice's Karolina Zelinka was named the WAC Mountain Division Player of the Week.
AUSSIES SWEEP SWIM HONORS: Australia's Dean Mercer won yesterday's Waikiki Roughwater Swim with a time of 50 minutes, 58 seconds.
Daniel McLellan was second in the men's open competition with a 51:06 clocking and former Punahou swim star John Flanagan took third in 51:09.
Kasey Giteau, a 15-year-old Australian, took women's open honors with a time of 57:24. Marisa Watts was just 11 seconds behind and Katie Welch was 16 seconds back.
PATACCHIA WINS SURF MEET: Fred Patacchia Jr. surfed to victory in the Billabong Junior Pro Trials yesterday in 4- to 6-foot waves at Kewalo Basin, earning a berth in the November Billabong Junior Pro event on Kauai.
Patacchia also picked up $1,250, which will help pay his way to the Amateur World meet in Portugal.
He beat out Jesse Merle-Jones, Jason Bogie and Jason Shibata in the final heat.
KURATA BOWLING KINGPIN: Chance Kurata of Honolulu won the Bud Light Hawaii Match Game Bowling Championship yesterday at Aiea Bowl, earning a trip to the Bud Light ABC Masters Championship at Syracuse, N.Y.
Kurata compiled a 9-2-1 record, to 8-4 for runner-up Chad Horiuchi.
VULCANS FALL IN VOLLEYBALL: The University of Hawaii at Hilo women's volleyball team lost a five-game battle with Cal State-Los Angeles last night at the UHH gymnasium.
The Golden Eagles (4-3) dropped the first two games of the NCAA Division II contest before rallying to win, 13-15, 7-15, 15-8, 15-5, 15-10. The Vulcans dropped to 3-4.
MATCH PLAY GOLF TOURNEY: The Aloha Section PGA Match Play Championships will be played Sept. 20-23 on the Wailea Gold Course at Maui's Wailea Golf Club.
A qualifying round will be played Sept. 20, followed by rounds 1 and 2 Sept. 21, the quarterfinals and semifinals Sept. 22 and the final Sept. 23.
Ron Castillo Jr. of Hapuna is the defending champion.
WORLD BODYBOARD MEET: The first World Bodyboard Games will be contested at Oahu's Sandy Beach between July 22 and Aug. 2, 1999, it was announced yesterday by the International Surfing Association.
The second World Bodyboard Games will be held in Sintra, Portugal, in September of 2001.
HPU HARRIERS HAVE NEW COACH: Sylvia Sanchez Fisher, a former NAIA All-American in cross country and track, has been named coach of the Hawaii Pacific University men's and women's cross-country teams.
Fisher succeeds 10-year HPU coach Happy Chapman. She is the first female coach in the 15-year history of the Sea Warriors' program.
