What ever happened to the rat problem in Waikiki trees? No sign of rats now
in trees at WaikikiRats took over a landmark banyan tree in Waikiki near the police substation on Kalakaua Avenue last fall. The problem came to a head after one rat ran up Mayor Jeremy Harris' pant leg as he inspected the site.
The city immediately called a professional exterminator, No Ka Oi Termite and Pest Control, which set traps around the tree.
The company cleared rats from the surfboard racks next to the Waikiki police substation to a popular bodyboarding area called "Walls," in addition to other nearby banyan trees.
Parks workers were instructed to notify the city if they saw evidence of the rat problem returning, said city spokeswoman Carol Costa. So far, she said, no sign of rats in trees.
