Seki earns U.S.
Amateur berth

Jim Seki Jr. shot a 3-under-par 69 yesterday at the Navy-Marine golf course for a 140 total to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Championship later this month at Rochester, N.Y.

HAWAII TEAM STAYS IN HUNT: Keala Fujimori's run-scoring double in the ninth inning gave Hawaii a 12-11 victory over Sacramento (District 5) last night in a loser-out game of the Little League Big League Division (16-18) Western Regional baseball tournament at Sacramento, Calif.

After Fujimori's double scored Kevin Higa in the top of the ninth, Hawaii dodged a bullet in the bottom half when a Chad Agustine-Kellan Briones-Higa relay gunned down the potential tying run at the plate.

Hawaii played unbeaten Conejo Valley, Calif., today, needing to win twice to take the regional title.

WARRIORS WIN TWO: Baba Marino's bases-loaded triple in the first game and two triples by Bronson Leong, good for five RBIs, in the second game helped the Hawaii Warriors pound Encinitas, 19-6, and Orange County, 15-7, yesterday in the AAU National Championship for 13-year-olds at Riverside, Calif.

WAHINE 14TH, 15TH IN POLLS: The University of Hawaii women's volleyball team was ranked 14th in yesterday's USA Today/AVCA Top 25 preseason poll.

The Wahine, 25-8, last season, received 509 points. The preseason favorite is Penn State, followed by Long Beach State, Southern Cal, Stanford and Nebraska.

Brigham Young, at No. 8, was the only other WAC team in the poll.

In the Volleyball magazine preseason poll, Hawaii was ranked 15. Long Beach State was picked No. 1 with Penn State second.

SEASIDERS NO. 4: The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's volleyball team was ranked No. 4 in yesterday's AVCA Division II coaches preseason poll.

The Seasiders will compete at the NCAA Division II level this season. BYU-Hawaii received eight first-place votes for 502 points.

At No. 1 was West Texas A&M. Hawaii-Hilo was ranked 20th.

BYUH completed a four-year streak as NAIA national champion last season with a 32-0 record.

TICKET DEADLINE EXTENDED: The deadline to renew tickets for the 17th Jeep Aloha Bowl Football Classic on Christmas Day has been extended to Friday.

Public ticket sales for the Dec. 25 doubleheader begin Sept. 3 at Aloha Stadium. Ticket sales recently topped the 17,000 mark, an 11 percent increase over last year.

Fans also may call the Bowl Games of Hawaii (947-4141) to charge by telephone.

TOMORI OPENS WITH 79: Hawaii's Christel Tomori shot a 79 and is well behind the leaders after the first round of the 98th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship yesterday at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Brenda Corrie Kuehn, Virginia Derby Grimes and Jenny Glasgow all shot course-record 2-under-par 70s to share the first-round lead in stroke play qualifying. The top 64 qualifiers after today's second round will begin match-play competition tomorrow.

HOOTERS FISH FEST: The Hooters Big Game Fishing Tournament is scheduled for this weekend off the Keehi Small Boat Harbor.
