Kailua trail leads
to new project

What ever happened to the Sierra Club's project to construct better access to Maunawili Falls Access Trail?

For years, hikers cut through private property to get to the Maunawili Falls Access Trail.

The Kailua Neighborhood Board asked the Pan Pacific Development Co., owners of nearby Luana Hills Golf Course, to include public access to the falls access trail in their plans. The company contracted the job out to the Sierra Club.

The project drew massive public support and was completed in October 1996. More than 120 volunteer trail builders dedicated their weekends to clearing out underbrush, tearing down trees and laying down paths. They built the first 4,300 feet of the trail. The state Department of Land and Natural Resources completed the 1-1/2-mile trail.

The club is building a connecting trail linking the falls trail to a 10-mile path that begins at the hairpin turn on the Pali Highway and ends in Waimanalo. They are looking for volunteers to help complete the project by the end of September.

For information on upcoming hikes or to volunteer, call the Sierra Club at 538-6616 or visit their Web site at www.sierraclub.org.
