Grove Farm's chairman becomes CEO, president
LIHUE -- Hugh Kleban, chairman of the board of directors of Grove Farm Co., will succeed Guido Giacometti as president and chief executive officer.The company announced yesterday that Giacometti resigned from the position he has held since 1996. He first became a director of the Kauai company in 1987. Klebahn, board chairman since 1996 and a board member since 1991, is a great grandnephew of company founder G.N. Wilcox. Klebahn said he will continue Giacometti's work transitioning Grove Farm from an operating company into an asset management company.
Straub nurses union confirmed by NLRB
A group of Straub Hospital staff nurses say they hope a united front will help them improve patient services and management relations.The National Labor Relations Board yesterday confirmed last month's vote to unionize. On July 17, Straub nurses voted 101 to 83 in favor of the Hawaii Nurses' Association becoming their union representative. The hospital had challenged the eligibility of 23 voters and asked the NLRB for a ruling. The nurses join more than 3,400 HNA private sector registered nurses. Only three private hospitals in Hawaii are nonunion, according to the association.
United Airlines, union to meet on relocation
United Airlines management and representatives of the union for the airline's flight attendants will meet in Chicago tomorrow in negotiations over what to do with the 300-plus Hawaii-based flight attendants the airline says it no longer needs.The airline, the major subsidiary of UAL Corp., said it has offered to have the Hawaii staffers work the Seattle-Tokyo service that United will start in early October. The cabin crews would work a six-day stint -- work a flight from Honolulu to Tokyo, stay overnight, work a flight from Tokyo to Seattle, stay overnight, work the Seattle-Tokyo service and, after another overnight stay, work Tokyo-Honolulu.
Kevin Lum, president of the Association of Flight Attendants, said that poses a problem for Seattle-based attendants who believe they have the right to work the Japan service.
Dallas-based company buys isle juice plant
Southern Food Group has purchased the operations of Excelsior Dairy Inc. and its tropical fruit juice processing plant on the Big Island from Mountain View Dairies Inc.Dallas-based Southern Food Group also owns and operates Meadow Gold Dairies Inc. on Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island. Excelsior's dairy processing and distribution functions will be integrated with Meadow Gold's Hilo processing plant, said Glenn K. Muranaka, president and general manager of Meadow Gold Dairies.
