Hawaii team falls short

The FILA Hawaii Select basketball team lost to Wisconsin, 52-40, in the consolation championship of the Adidas Boys Youth Tournament last night at Las Vegas.

Kalaheo's Julian Sensley scored 13 points to lead the Hawaii team. Sensley was named to the all-tournament team.

MOVERS WIN: Dane Sardinha's sacrifice fly to center scored Billy Jacobson in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie as the Hawaii Island Movers edged the Mat-Su Miners, 2-1, in an Alaska Summer League baseball game last night at Rainbow Stadium.

Sean Yamashita and David Battagin combined to four-hit the Miners. Mat-su's only run came in the top of the first when Andrew Huling scored on an error by Yamashita.

The Movers tied it in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Waugh that scored Sardinha. The teams continue their series with a 6 p.m. game tonight.

MURPHY'S AUCTION: The third Murphy's Auction, a benefit for the University of Hawaii football program's training table, is scheduled for July 30 at Murphy's Bar and Grill.

Among the items to be auctioned are a year's preferred membership at the Koolau Golf Course, tickets to the Hawaii-Michigan football game and a golf vacation package at Koele Lodge. Tickets are $75 per person and include an all-you-can-eat buffet dinner.

HPU ON KUMU: Hawaii Pacific University officials have agreed to a two-year contract with Pacific West Broadcasting to air Sea Warrior volleyball, basketball, softball and baseball games live on KUMU II (AM-1500) through the spring of 2000.

Kanoa Leahey has signed on to be the "Voice of the Sea Warriors" and also will host a weekly sports talk show on Tuesdays called "HPU Sports Beat." The program will air from 5-6 p.m. beginning Sept. 14.

HPU, moving from NAIA to NCAA Division II status this season, will compete in the Pacific Division of the Pacific West Conference.

YOYOS AND KITES: "Fun on a String," featuring the Team High Performance Hawaii yoyo team, 200 yoyo players from Japan and four-time national kite-flying champion Alan Nagao, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, at Magic Island, Ala Moana Beach Park.

National yoyo champion Alex Garcia, 1997 world single-handed yoyo champ Nalukai Ho'okano and yoyo masters Dennis McBride and Bill Deboisblanc also are scheduled to appear, along with Japanese yoyo sensation Kenichi "Meijin" Nakamura.

SPECIAL GOLF DAY AT KOOLAU: The Koolau Golf Club will hold its Kamaaina Appreciation Day from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Windward course, with a four-person scramble, club demonstrations by Callaway, Top Flite and others, and a buffet lunch and awards ceremony.

Registration and a continental breakfast are set for 7 a.m., followed at 8 by the shotgun start of the tournament.

The club is located at 45-500 Kionaole Road in Kaneohe.

KAILUA NIGHT DOUBLES: The Kailua Racquet Club's 28th Night Doubles Tennis Tournament will run from July 26 through Aug. 8 with 48 teams of top professional and amateur players from Hawaii competing for a $5,000 purse.

Qualifying matches are scheduled for July 26-31, with the main draw to begin on Aug. 2.

There will be matches at 6 and 7:30 each evening. The final is set for 6 p.m., Aug. 8.
