Straub challenging vote by nurses to form union

Nurses at Straub Hospital have voted in favor of union representation, but the hospital is challenging the results.

The counting of ballots yesterday showed that 101 nurses voted to join the Hawaii Nurses Association, with 83 voting against. But Maryann Marsh of the HNA said Straub has challenged the eligibility of 23 of the voters. The National Labor Relations Board will investigate the hospital's claim.

Marsh said Straub nurses asked for union representation because they were concerned about staffing issues and patient care. Straub cut nonphysician salaries by 3 percent earlier this year.

GTE profits up slightly; data unit loss widens

STAMFORD, Conn. -- GTE Corp., the No. 3 U.S. local phone company, said second-quarter earnings rose slightly as strong revenue growth was offset by wider losses in its new data operations.

GTE's net income rose to $673 million, or 69 cents a diluted share, from $671 million, or 70 cents, a year earlier. GTE, parent of Hawaiian Tel, was expected to earn 70 cents. The company had more shares outstanding in the recent quarter, which reduced the per-share earnings.
