Six Hawaii boxers
advance to Jr. Olympic
quarterfinals

Six Hawaii fighters advanced to today's quarterfinals of the National Jr. Olympics boxing championships at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Mich.

Winning their bouts last night were Dat Nguyen of Wailuku, Maui, Samson Guillermo of Waianae and Donaldo Holguin of the Kalakaua Boxing Club.

Nguyen took his 106-pound opener by decisioning Josh Henry of Ozark, Ala. Guillermo defeated Jose Pedraza of Caldwell, Idaho, when the referee stopped their 112-pound contest in the first round. Holguin outpointed San Diego's Charles Gladish in their three-round, 132-pound contest.

Advancing with byes were Waianae's J.J. Rodriguez (85 pounds), Kalakaua's Gaylord Balasi (139) and Martin Marfil (178) of Makawao, Maui.

Losing their bouts last night were Kalakaua's Jesus Mabuti (100) and Jonathan Balbas (147) and Herman Marfil (165) of Makawao.

The gold medalists will represent the United States in an international tournament in Tijuana, Mexico, July 4-11.

ISLAND MOVERS WIN BIG: Dane Sardinha had three hits and drove in three runs as the Hawaii Island Movers rode a nine-run second-inning explosion to a 15-3 exhibition baseball victory over the All-Hawaii Select team last night at Rainbow Stadium.
