


Anthony Carter received two extra gifts for his 23rd birthday yesterday. The former University of Hawaii basketball star got a date for surgery and encouraging news that the damage to his left shoulder should be easily reparable. Carter to have
shoulder surgery FridayCarter had a consultation with Dr. James Andrews at the Alabama Sports Medicine Clinic in Birmingham. After discussions with Carter's agent, Bill Duffy, surgery was scheduled for Friday morning.
The prognosis is for full recovery in three-four months. Carter is expected to receive physical therapy in Atlanta.
MATCH PLAY SEMIFINALISTS: Medalist Anna Umemura led the field into today's semifinals of the Hawaii State Women's Golf Association Match Play Championships with a 3 and 2 victory over Mal-Ja Kwon yesterday at the Oahu Country Club course.
In the other second-round matches yesterday, Kari Williams defeated Mahina Ah Yuen, 2 and 1; Christel Tomori topped Marcie Rudich, 5 and 4, and Kathy Cho beat Marie Miyashiro, 2-up.
LACROSSE THE SEA: Eight members of the Hawaii Lacrosse Club will play for a U.S. team against the Japanese national team in a pair of friendship games Saturday and Sunday in Tokyo.
The players from Hawaii are Harry Jackson, Doug Appleton, Mark Tarone, Jay Bloom, Jeff Kloetzel, Alan Carpenter, Jim Griswold and Pete Madrinan.
JUNIOR BOWLING CHAMPS: Four junior bowlers will represent Hawaii at the $35,000 Scholarship International Coca Cola Youth Bowling Championship Tournament, July 29 to August 2 at Houston.
Valerie Zahirniak, of the Hickam Youth Bowlers and Don Wagatsuma of the Big Island Junior Bowlers won spots in the 12 to 21 Handicap Division during the qualifying tournament at Schofield Bowling Center.
Holly Hoopii of Waialae Strike & Spare Club and Jason Kuromoto of Aiea Whiz Kids won in the 12 to 21 Scratch Division.
