Maui onions offer
sweet inspiration

The thought of confronting a raw onion is enough to drive some people running from the room. But such fears don't apply to the Maui onion, a mild, sweet bulb that goes down easy.

The ninth annual Maui Onion Festival pays tribute to the sweet treat. It runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 31 through Aug. 2 at Whalers Village, with mini-classes, craft booths featuring onion art, an onion-eating contest and food booths featuring Maui onion products.

You can even learn to make a Maui onion doll.

A recipe contest invites amateurs and professionals to compete for a $100 first prize. There will also be a $50 second prize and $20 third prize.

Request an entry form by writing: Maui Onion Recipe Contest, P.O. Box 537, Puunene, HI 96784, or have the form faxed to you by calling 1-808-875-0457.

Entry forms will be available July 1.

For inspiration, check out a couple of best-buy offerings this week for sweet Maui onions, 99 cents a pound with Foodland's Maka'i Card, or $1.19 per pound with a Safeway Club card.

Then get ready to put dad's favorite combination on the table on his day, Sunday. Pair onions with boneless chuck steak, $1.98 per pound at Daiei, and Star Market specials of sirloin steak, $2.09 a pound, or boneless London or top round steak at $2.99 per pound. Broiler mushrooms, at 99 cents per 8-ounce carton with Times Royal Card, add to the mix.

Other best buys for the week are a pork shoulder blade roast, 69 cents per pound with a Safeway Club card, and previously frozen whole Dungeness crab is $2.97 per pound with your Foodland Maka'i Card.

And now's the time to stock up on Valley Fresh Chicken Broth on sale at $1 for four 14.5-ounce cans with the Royal Card.
