sweet inspirationThe ninth annual Maui Onion Festival pays tribute to the sweet treat. It runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 31 through Aug. 2 at Whalers Village, with mini-classes, craft booths featuring onion art, an onion-eating contest and food booths featuring Maui onion products.
You can even learn to make a Maui onion doll.
A recipe contest invites amateurs and professionals to compete for a $100 first prize. There will also be a $50 second prize and $20 third prize.

For inspiration, check out a couple of best-buy offerings this week for sweet Maui onions, 99 cents a pound with Foodland's Maka'i Card, or $1.19 per pound with a Safeway Club card.
Then get ready to put dad's favorite combination on the table on his day, Sunday. Pair onions with boneless chuck steak, $1.98 per pound at Daiei, and Star Market specials of sirloin steak, $2.09 a pound, or boneless London or top round steak at $2.99 per pound. Broiler mushrooms, at 99 cents per 8-ounce carton with Times Royal Card, add to the mix.
Other best buys for the week are a pork shoulder blade roast, 69 cents per pound with a Safeway Club card, and previously frozen whole Dungeness crab is $2.97 per pound with your Foodland Maka'i Card.
And now's the time to stock up on Valley Fresh Chicken Broth on sale at $1 for four 14.5-ounce cans with the Royal Card.
