Kaleikini shows
Papakolea prideENTERTAINER Danny Kaleikini, who with Linda Wong just opened a wedding chapel in Kahaluu, has long been proud of the fact that he hailed from Papakolea. So it was a natural that when the Papakolea Community Association's Puni Kekauoha decided to enter a float in the Kamehameha Day Parade for the first time in two decades that Danny was called upon to ride on the float. He was joined by another longtime Papakolea resident, Aunty Genoa Keawe, and they were extremely proud to win the Governor's Award for best noncommercial float and the Perpetual Trophy for most outstanding unit in the parade ...
LOCAL actress Aiko Nakasone, who was in the original company of "Rent" in New York, left the hit show last week. No word on where she'll surface next, but having "Rent" on your resume can't hurt ... It's "Hello and Goodbye" time at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hotel June 26. There'll be a private reception to meet new G.M. Bernard Agache and at the same time to bid aloha to outgoing public relations director Suzanne Erler, who's relocating to Seattle ...

A (40) Grand Time
THERE was little fanfare surrounding it, but Marcus and Associates and late owner Marcus Nishikawa's golf club held a golf tourney in his honor at Honolulu Country Club and raised over $40,000 for the Childhood Cancer Projects of the Hawaii Cancer Society. It enables kids with cancer and their families to attend special camps, some of which are going on right now. There were 210 people in the tourney, with 70 3-man teams, and everyone showed up -- not a single no-show -- a fitting tribute to Nishikawa, a lifelong smoker who died of cancer a year ago ...WHILE people complain about the lack of scoring in World Cup soccer matches, I'm thankful for it. The reason is simple. Where once the most annoying thing in sports was when Marv Albert bellowed "Yes" when someone scored a basket in the NBA, that annoyance now has been surpassed in spades by Andres Cantor. Name unfamiliar? That's the guy who, whenever someone scores in a televised soccer match screams out "Goooooooooooooal" until he runs out of breath. Let's keep that scoring down, boys ...
Brothers Galore
THEIR friends know them as Tom and Ray Magliozzi, but on their Peabody Award-winning National Public Radio show, "Car Talk," they're known as "Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers." The two, whose show originates in Boston (produced by "Dewey Cheetham and Howe"), are celebrating "ten years of bad car advice." To commemorate their show, which aims to take the terror out of engine repair, the Tappet Brothers will be appearing live on closed circuit TV. It can be seen in Hawaii at the Castle Performing Arts Center in Kaneohe as a benefit for Hawaii Public Radio. (Call 955-8821 for details.) Special guests on the 2 to 6 p.m. telecast will be the Flying Karamazov Brothers, The Smothers Brothers and Dr. Joyce Brothers. Should be lots of Brotherly love both in -- and on -- the air ...
